1. Had to go with Maiden
Run to the hills, run for your lives!

6-6-6 the number of the beast!

2. I've got "Number of the Beast" on a mix CD in the car...
...and I've been blasting it daily.

Lemmy consistently brands Motorhead as a "rock and roll band," and I agree with him...they are not metal in the same way that Def Leppard is not metal.

So for me it comes down to Priest or Maiden, and I've got to go with Maiden too...although it's a 51% / 49% split. They're pretty much "separate but equal" peers.

:toast:

3. Motorhead is pretty heavy
I haven't listened to a lot of their stuff, but from what I've heard they sound like they would have been considered metal back when they first came out. They formed in 1976. But then along came Metallica, and Megadeth, and Maiden, and Slayer and they pretty much redefined metal in the 80s. Hell, Quiet Riot was considered metal until Kill 'Em all came out.

4. Def Leppard is on the list because ...
... any band whose drummer loses an arm in an accident, and carries on playing, has out-Tapped Spinal Tap. He's lived what other heavy metal bands put on their album covers.

5. Yeah, got to give him props for that
I think his story and how he came back from that accident is very inspirational.

6. Maiden and Priest are excellent, but there's only one choice...

I almost want to vote Saxon though, just because the name Biff Byford cracks me up. :)
