What did you do for Valentine's day yesterday ?
I got Mrs bearfan flowers, candy, a card, and a long night shirt to sleep in. She likes those to sleep in. She doesn't want me to buy teddies for her any more. She got a head to toe massage too. I cleaned up the kitchen, vacuum'd, washed clothes, folded and put away laundry, swept and mopped the tile areas with bleach, cooked supper and did the dishes, and bought our 3 year old granddaughter a coat and some play doh. That was my day. What about you guys ?

1. Went out to the place we had our first date for fried clams
and ate candy all day. :puke:

I also watched the kitties try to eat the flowers and fearing they were poisonous, brought them down to the soup kitchen near my house so someone else could enjoy their beauty.

2. Played a gig...
We performed a semi-staged version of "The Music Man" to a packed house; so I can now pay a few bills ;-)

Today's our Valentine's Day.

4. Then you missed out on
the best date in town...yourself!

I know...It sucks to be alone on Valentines Day; but that's all the more reason to be kind to yourself. Why not celebrate tonight? Treat yourself to a nice meal...rent a movie or go see a show. Nobody could ever understand you like you!

5. A full day.
I hate valentine's day. With a passion. Bad karma in my life. And forced observation every year in my elementary school classroom leaves me gritting my teeth and pasting a fake smile on my face until the day is over.

So I finished the obligatory work farce Friday, and was not thinking at all about it being "Valentine's Day" yesterday. I got up early, loaded up the peace walkers who had walked into town Friday afternoon, and transported them an hour north to a town who had planned a welcome, a walk, and some activities. Jonathan rode in the back with my dog, Rain, in his lap.

We got there in time to enjoy a presentation of space-age human-hive shelters by a fascinating resident; then we started with a prayer circle for world peace, and walked 4.5 miles through town, led by another resident, who stopped at historical landmarks, gave us plenty of information about local history and current activism, and talked Kucinich and peace with us the whole way. We stopped for lunch in front of Albertsons, hosted by the locked out workers picketing. Several of the picketers tried to negotiate with me to let them take Rain home with them, LOL, but I resisted until the end. She attracted people coming in and out of the market, who came to pet her and stayed to hear about the strike, Dennis, and world peace. We continued on down the main road through town, with people honking, waving, and stopping to chat. 4 or 5 young skateboarders stopped to find out what we were doing, and were so intrigued that they spent 20 minutes or so with us and took pictures. Then on to the end of the walk, where Jonathan and Amy met up with their host for the evening; we finished with another prayer circle for peace to close the event, and someone gave Rain and I a ride back to our car so we could make the trip home. When I got home, my oldest son was waiting to take me to dinner (a surprise!). We had a long, leisurely meal, and a long leisurely debate over several current issues. He dropped me off, and when I walked in there was my younger son with a large bouquet, a hug, and a happy valentine's day for me.

Perhaps the best V-day I've ever spent.

What a great guy.

Edit: If you ever feel the need to test the "right" wing's theory that legalizing gay marriage will lead to, among other things, polygamy, look me up. ;)

10. Went out with friends
A couple of the Austin DUers and I went out to dinner - had Mongolian barbq...yummmmmm. Then we wandered around an electronics store for a while and then went out for ice cream and then sat around the house and talked for a bit. Not a bad way to distract ourselves from not having a date on V-Day. :-)

17. We were at Loveland Ski Area, Colorado for the mass marriage
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 02:11 PM by librechik
Loveland has an annual Valentine's Day mass-marriage ceremony with grooms in tuxes and brides in veils and both wearing skis & boots. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and really great to see the creativity and good-natured fun in the costumes (loved the red Devil Bride!) and feel the lovey dovey vibe. Lots of high altitude kissing. Silver Plume Harry the preacher wore a Victorian era morning coat and top hat, and his bride of over 40 years was nearby. Yes, sometimes, love works.

My daughter is planning a wedding sometime in the future, and watching all the happy sunburnst couples we said, "You ought to come up here next year and do this!" My daughter shrieked "Noooooo!" Val Girl style. But I thought it was cute. A bunch of couples repeat their vows here every year!

What did me and hubby do? Rented a romantic cottage in the Columbine Inn (one of the places Nabokov stayed in while he was writing Lolita and travelling cross country) and went to bed early so as to wake up in time for early lift lines on President's Day Saturday. Strangely enough, that was great fun, and realized a lifelong ambition for both of us (following Nabokov's Colorado trail)

18. A day o' frustration
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 03:04 PM by scottcsmith
We don't usually celebrate Valentine's Day, but I got my wife a nice card and a little teddy bear, which I snuck into her purse so that she'd find them when she left for work. For some reason I thought Friday was Valentine's Day. Oh well.

Yesterday was spent in frustration, dealing with a brand-new, but defective, television.

It was a Philips 30-inch wide screen. This was a heavy TV, about 160 pounds. We purchased it on Friday and by the time we got home (it seemed to take hours at Best Buy to purchase the damn thing) I was tired and decided to hook everything up the next morning.

I did, and the TV worked great for about three hours, when suddenly the picture went blurry. It didn't matter what I was viewing: the DVD player, the Playstation 2, regular cable television: a horribly blurred picture. Even after disconnecting all the cables the picture still was blurry. You'd think a $500 TV would last longer than three hours, but I've heard that Philips has a horrible record when it comes to defects in their products.

So, we had to haul the set back to Best Buy. Once at Best Buy they provided the worst possible customer service. They didn't want to let us return the set, despite their policy of having 14 days to return any item without explanation. We tried to explain what was wrong but they were not listening, and when they plugged in the set, they didn't seem to think the blurred picture displayed was a defect. After lots of back and forth arguing they agreed to take the TV and refund our money. By that point we were pretty frustrated and made our way to our favorite Indian restaurant for dinner. We found a different model TV at another place at a very low price. The store is called "Video Only" and that's all they sell, televisions. What a difference in service. Best Buy was staffed by teenagers who didn't seem to know what the hell they were doing. The Video Only salesmen were dressed in long-sleeved shirts, slacks and wearing a tie. They spent time with us and explained how each set we were interested in rated in customer satisfaction. We found our TV, and were in and out in about 15 minutes.

And now, I've somehow come down with a cold. Oy.

21. I got an e-card.
It kinda made the pain of Valentine's Day more bareable. My ex-gf leaving me while I was in the hospital when I found out I had diabetes makes this time of year a little painful.

I stayed with DU yesterday.

22. I sat on the Gamecube for most of the afternoon.
Then I studied for my Advanced Stratigraphy test for tomorrow. Then I played some more Gamecube (Metroid Prime). I then watched Mike Malloy on Fox News Channel.(He was awesome!) Then I played more Gamecube, then went to bed.

Nothing spectacular.

24. Had a date at home.
My partner and I have been together now 8 years almost. It's another weekend to us, lol..

Still, we went to rent movies. 'Lost in Translation' and 'Johnny English' were rented-out, so we got two other goofy movies: 'Anger Management' and 'A View From the Top.'

Then we went to Popeyes! Yum!!!

Then we went to the grocery store and bought ice cream and ice cream accessories for dessert.

Then we went home, lit some candles, fixed our plates, and watched 'Anger Management.'

Then we made out a bit.

Then he went to bed around 9pm, since he had to be at work at midnight (working as a manager in a newspaper distribution warehouse). :(

Money is tight, but it was still a really good Valentine's Day. I enjoyed it. And we're still in love. :loveya:
