It was MUCH truer to the book. Now that I've seen that version, the Gene Wilder version suffers in comparison, IMO.

I like Dahl's book, but the original movie is one of those cases where I prefer the movie to the book. I didn't care for the Burton/Depp remake very much.

I just finished reading it to Strange, Jr and he got to watch both movies. I put the question to him. "Which movie did you like better?" "I like them both the same." "Did you like the book or the movies better?" "I like the book and both movies the same."
My kid's a panderer. I really liked Johnny Depp's take on Willy Wonka, so I went with that movie.
