22. I haven't, no
I just didn't believe DiCaprio as the love interest... I thought he should be more rugged and better looking, but instead Leonardo's this delicate, pretty little boy.

It sort of blew the movie for me. Among other things.

Never liked slasher/horror flicks. I was sort of tricked into seeing Jacob's Ladder - I didn't know anything about it beforehand. Not that JL is a slasher/horror movie, it just has some disturbing and vivid imagery that creeped me out.

having to do with the drug he may or may not have been given. It's pretty intense, too :)

I had never heard of the movie until a friend made a copy of his DVD a couple of years ago. I've since seen at least one site and messageboard devoted to discussing just that one movie.

149. Someone in Hollywood got the wrong idea that disgusting = scary.
One of my favorite horror movies of all time is John Carpenter's remake of "The Thing". The two scariest parts in that movie for me are the "blood test" and when the makeshift spaceship is discovered underneath the compound. To me, those scenes are scary because they are mind-bendingly freaky, not because they are gory and disgusting.

164. Disgusting = scary???
That's why "The Hills Have Eyes" was NOT scary for me.

"The Shining" was scary. The scene from "I Am Legend" where he goes into the warehouse after the dog was scary. Part of "Blair Witch" were scary. All because they didn't show too much.

Alfred Hitchcock knew this back in the day, but most modern directors seem to have forgotten this. :(

171. I have a really pathetic obsession
I ALWAYS give movies a chance. Even when it's dawning on me that I'm watching a crapfest, I'll watch the whole thing to give it a chance to redeem itself. I ordered Moulin Rouge on PPV because I'd heard so many good things about it. And I watched every. damned. red-tinted. minute. of it. Verdict: No redeeming qualities.

38. The Wedding Date
My fiancee's boss was gushing about how wonderful the movie was and loaned us a copy. We watched it and kept waiting for it to stop being terrible. Even the credits were awful. We watched all of the extra features in the vain hopes that we hadn't wasted a full hour and a half. It turns out that every unanswered question about the premise, plot, and character backgrounds was answered by the deleted scenes--the cutting room floor material was the stuff that explained what the hell was going on!

107. Some of it actually was very good, and there was some great photography,
but it was sooooo looooong, and some of it just went on and on and on, that I just don't think I could bring myself to sit through it again. I can't say it actually sucked, though. Just toooo sloooow.

49. Breaking the Waves by Lars von Trier
Quite honestly, I've essentially stopped going to the movies. I can't deal with very much violence in movies, I get so frustrated by the mandatory tit shots, and all too often I find myself feeling emotionally manipulated and it annoys me (I think older films are less ham handed about staging things to get exactly the emotional response they want - I find myself in movies thinking, "ah, the director wants me to feel XX emotion now").

60. Mark of the Devil
I saw this when I was in junior high school, with a friend who was really into horror movies. I can't believe we were allowed in the theater, because there were scenes of nude people being tortured. But the movie hadn't been rated with the standard system...It was rated "V" for violence. It was seriously gross, and I could barely watch. I should have left, but I was stupid, and didn't want to seem uncool.

It defies explanation, so you'd kinda have to see it. You probably shouldn't though. It's gross, sexist, racist and mostly dumb. The sort of movie where a major female character is topless for the entire movie and no reason is ever given. There is a lot of blackface "comedy", not surprisingly a certain derogatory word for African-Americans is uttered repeatedly, a colon is used as a major scene backdrop, scatological farce plays huge role.

73. Hmm some disagreements here... I love almost everything Kubrick did
even when the story was rubbish (think Eyes Wide Shut), he created visual masterpieces.

Moulin Rouge was fantastic, but if you don't appreciate post-modern pastiche you might hate it.

Don't even get me started on someone dismissing Peter Greenaway. The Cook, the Thief... is not his best, but still an interesting (if sick) picture.

======================

Please, throw some real rubbish out there... like anything Will Smith has ever done (and yes Ali is part of that). If you want to go for highly rated rubbish how about:

Gods and Generals was way too long and drawn out, though.

The one exception was the scene where they show Jackson's sneak attack on the Northern flank at Chancellorsville. The accompanying music was great--started out slow and forboding, and slowly worked its way up to a creshendo with an Wagnerian opera-like gusto.

Just plain stupid.

I guess I'm not the pretentious hipster type or else I'd probably take a liking to Kevin Smith.

Actually, Kevin Smith is tolerable usually--Clerks and Chasing Amy were okay--but he failed miserably at putting together a good satire on the subject of God and religion. What was left was an utter train wreck.

111. Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Teorema"
With Terance Stamp.

I rented it from Netflix a couple of months ago.

Needless to say, I wish I could get that 1 hour and 40 some minutes back.

Dreary, pretentious crap. I never, ever, wish to see that movie again. Ever.

113. "Last Year at Marienbad"
Edited on Mon Apr-07-08 01:09 PM by DFW
My parents wanted to nominate me for the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Silver Star,
and a Purple Heart when they found out that I sat through the whole thing. They walked
after it was half over. I think "The Gold of Cairo" was Oscar material by comparison,
and Frederico Fabrizi, the director, didn't even exist.

140. You have to be "in the zone" for "Marienbad"...
...if you are, it's a soul-satisfying experience, I can assure you.

How do you get "in the zone"? Well, it differs from person to person.

116. The Matrix (aka "Ernest Goes to Space")
The Matrix-- proof positive that even a good, solid idea can be watered down, dumbed down, and drained of any originality it may have once possessed to better suit the beer-swilling masses of movie-goers.

Honestly-- I'd have been much more satisfied if they had kept its original title-- "Ernest Goes to Space"...

142. Andrew McCarthy deserves neither your sorrow nor your pity...
...he's done what he's done. He'll have to answer for that. There is a special place in Hell reserved for everyone associated with "Fresh Horse." Except for Molly Ringwald, who gets forgiveness for "16 Candles." Plus, she's adorable. Andy ain't, and never was.

Not to mention that ending—they marketed it as a film about "values"! Plus, my beloved Sean Penn was phoning it in the entire time, while Benizio de Torro's far superior performance was totally marginalized by the crap Penn-Naomi Watts plot. Vile.

152. i'll go for a recent nominee --
"There Will Be Blood".

in preparation for viewing i read "Oil" by Upton Sinclair, upon which the movie is purportedly based.

after 37 minutes it was plain to see that there was only a very cursory nodding relationship between the book and the movie.

if they ever make a decent movie of "Oil", i'd love to see it. but "TWBB" was, in my opinion, THE worst book-to-movie EVER.
