If you had only one day in London, where would you go?
We're taking another Cosmos tour next month, and we only have one day in London before taking the ferry to the Continent. We've already been to the Tower of London, done a doubledecker bus tour, ridden the London Eye, been to Harrods and seen the outside of Buckingham Palace (didn't go in). What would you say is absolutely indispensable? St. Paul's? The British Museum?

Thanks for any ideas you can provide!

1. Somewhere they can grant me sanctuary
And citizenship.

Seriously, one day? I've been in London for weeks at a time and it's never been enough.

A couple of ideas:

- If it's the weekend, Camden Town Market.
- Wandering around Piccadilly, including visiting St. James Church (you can do brass rubbings).
- A theater matinee followed by a leisurely few hours in a good pub.
- If you're there for lunch or dinner, INDIAN food.

There's so much more, but I'm blanking...

143 pounds for a lousy t-shirt? No thank you! I did buy some tote bags - that was all I could afford!

16. You cannot do the British Museum in one day.
True, you can see the Rosetta Stone and all, but if you want to see the whole thing, you need to devote at least two days to it.

6. Madame Toussaud's Museum. AWESOME. Some of the
wax figures looked SO damn real. Creepy-real.

If you like the party scene, you can't go wrong with the Piccadilly Circus area. It was a great time! :)

8. The Victoria and Albert Museum
The Tate Gallery, or the British Museum, If you have a whole day, I'd hit one museum in the morning and another in the afternoon. And hit a good Indian restaurant in between and after.

9. Kew Gardens
Sounds like you've done most of the in-town stuff.

Kew is GREAT even if you're not a floral fan.

LOTS of history, and the Hanover's houses.

I spent a WONDERFUL day there, all by myself,
wandering around...definitely worth the
short trip!

Hampton Court is worth the day-trip fare (by boat), too!

Night-time: Free~~~Show up at the Tube Station across the street from the Tower for the "Jack the Ripper" tour!

But seriously? Nothing is more indispensable than Westminster. Plus, you can walk from there past Trafalgar Square to Covent Garden for lunch!

34. This was my 1st thought too...
There is so much to see in London - You could live there for years and miss something good.

For me Westminster Abby, Tower of London, Piccadilly Circus, all of the old, old pubs and the grave yards.

Must have the Indian food.

Must have the fish and chips.

You need to rethink this one day crap right now!

15. Ghost tour. Pub crawl.
I don’t believe it is indispensable, but fun is a good part of the deal. You will meet the most interesting people, from every corner of the world. Ask the guide about the theosophy society for extra credit.

If you don’t appreciate metaphysics and beer, there is a walking tour that will take you to the museums and the millennium bridge.

Skip the long queues, as you probably know, the British really know how to line up.

Stop in any pub for fish and chips.

22. Turned my stomach actually... kept thinking of Abu Ghraib
and just why the hell I was touring a place just as bad (if not worse).

Perhaps was part of the Zeitgeist at the time. I was there just after the tube bombings. In fact, arrived 1 day after the second attempt. The poor Brazilian guy was gunned-down while I was there.

The beauty of it? No freaking tourists to be seen. I had the crown jewels to myself (no kidding).

23. I was in London during the last IRA Christmas bombing campaign.
Edited on Mon Apr-07-08 03:48 PM by CottonBear
I kept riding the Tube because all of the Londoners were! Victoria Station was closed for a day, bombs went off in Tube carriages and a huge hole was blown in the tracks of a suburban train line coming into London. Gatwick was heavily guarded and patrolled by heavily armed, black clad paramilitary police.
:scared:
