Visiting Pittsburgh Next Week: What Should I Do There?
Edited on Mon Apr-07-08 03:27 PM by JCMach1
Part of the time will be devoted to a conference, but there will still be time for other things.

Umm apart from picking-up a Hillary AND an Obama sign for my villa in the UAE. I have to be prepared for the Fall.

3. Never been but I've heard it's one of the great unappreciated cities for modern art
and based on your mention of loving Warhol upthread, that seems like an interest of yours.

4. Do you like beer?
I can't remember what it's called, but a quick internet search will sort it out.

I've only been there once, but there's a really good micro brewery/bar that's inside of an old church, with a lot of the decor still intact. Really good beer in a really nice environment. They had good food too.

That place is great. .... And we were foolish and didn't buy any beer to go, which we should have done, since it's next to impossible to buy alcohol outside of a bar in Pennsylvania.

8. If you like art, they've got the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Andy Warhol Museum.
Both are well worth a look-see. I believe the Carnegie's collection
has expanded quite a bit since last I was there.

that doesn't go over well, here. My sister bought my son some Cleveland shirts and a keychain as a joke. It didn't go over well.

take in a game at PNC Park - although our PIrates have not done well for years, it's a great view and a beautiful ballpark, and hey, they might win! (there is always hope)

I second all the other fun suggestions made. The Church Brew Works is really neat and the brews are excellent.

22. Hey girl! How are ya?
I was going to recommend a Pirate game, but they're out of town next week. :( Too bad, because no matter how hard the Pirates suck, PNC Park is a great place to hang out.

To the OP: Bodies: The Exhibition is at the Carnegie Science Center till May 4, if you're into that sort of thing.

24. Kennywood. And-Make it a point to ride in to Pittsburgh, through the Tunnel. at some point.
It's one of the most spectacular things ever. A spectacular vista opens up suddenly.

And if you love Roller Coasters you MUST do Kennywood.

And find a traditional pizzeria that sells take-out by the slice. Sold in little white boxes.

Nothing in the world compares to the pizza in that region.

The natural history museum and planetarium are first rate too.

Oh yeah...and do the incline.

37. Now you'll be in my "neck of the woods"
:hi:

Depends on what your interests are:

Architecture - Take a walk around downtown, or drive out to Fallingwater (Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece in the Laurel Highlands)

History/Art - Besides Carnegie Museum head over to The Frick Art and Historical Center - it houses some of Henry Clay Frick's art collection and a small museum of his daughter Helen's collection. The Victorian era mansion is open to the public for tours. The Heinz History Center is a good place to get an overall view of the history of the area

Sports - maybe the Pirates are at home. It's a good opportunity to check out the stadium

Nature - Come see Spring develop in any of our state parks (all PA residents are within a 25 mile drive of a state park) or kayak/canoe any of our beautiful rivers. The Yough has whitewater.

Food - I don't like Primanti's but I guess you can go there and try it, just to say you did.

Have a great time!

dinner at Louis Tambellini's. It's been more than a decade but when I lived in OH and had to go over to P'burgh for business, this was a must and my clients/friends knew it. Best Italian restaurant, this Italian has ever enjoyed.

If they still do it, start at the bar with a glass of wine and the complimentary bleu cheese spread and crackers. :hi:
