GILBOA — An estimated 400 hogs died Monday in a barn fire in rural Gilboa, firefighters said late Monday. And, with the estimated 600 hogs that were rescued from the fire suffering from smoke inhalation, more might still die in the days to come.
Firefighters from the Gilboa, Leipsic and Ottawa fire departments responded at about 4:15 p.m. Monday to the barn fire, which was in the 2200 block of Road H.
Gilboa Fire Chief Jerry Hovest said they fought the blaze until about 9 p.m. and rescued as many of the estimated 1,000 hogs inside the barn as they could. He said they got about 60 percent of them out. While the value of each hog was difficult to determine, he said, they could easily be more than $80 each. Hovest said the barn, which is owned by Tom Fenstermeker, sustained an estimated $80,000 in damage.
Hovest said they did not know the cause of the fire Monday evening, but foul play was not suspected. A Leipsic medical squad also went to the barn fire, which is located between Road 2 and Road 3. No human injuries or deaths were reported.
