1. She wants to go.
If you'd like me to call and TELL her she wants to go, I will. She really, really, REALLY wants to go.

4. She also got into Tech and is leaning that way.
Either one is fine with me. NYU essentially recruited her because of her voice, so I feel as though she might be missing out on something really special if she decides not to go.

This process is really, really grueling. I'm trying to be supportive without offering my opinions so that she makes up her own mind. Ugh.

I've applied to grad school there 5 times and still no dice. (It's the only program in my field.)

12. Did she say WHY?
If you haven't already, I'd recommend sitting down with her and having a discussion (perhaps take her to a coffee shop or something) about what she wants and doesn't want out of college. Find out why she isn't sure she wants to go to NYU. Is she worried about living in NYC, or does she think she'd be a better fit somewhere else?

Just talk to her...and have an adult conversation. It might be necessary for her to also talk to an adult that she trusts who isn't her mom. ;) Choosing colleges is confusing and scary...just help her work through whatever's bothering her.

NYC can be a bit intimidating to one who has no experience of it. However, it IS the HUB of what's happening. I went to school at Lincoln Center many decades ago and my cousin (once removed) just graduated from NYU (photographer). He's now off to new adventures in Asia.

This is a chance of a lifetime to be in the CENTER of what's happening NOW and to make the contacts that will last a lifetime that will take you ANYWHERE YOU DECIDE TO GO!!! Please gather all the confidence you have in yourself and check it out! If, after a semester or two, you decide it's not your thing you can ALWAYS transfer and your credits will be accepted.

I wish you all the best life has to offer!!!

Much love,

Tante Karenina
(who now lives across the Big Pond and still meets classmates regularly! ;-) )

I don't think she's intimidated. More like not wanting to go that far from home.

29. I envy your kid's closeness to you!
My mom and I were at constant loggerheads after my dad's death and living below the Mason-Dixon Line was a trial by fire. At 15 I was MORE THAN READY to escape to my aunt's home and lived in NYC for a decade. It was SUCH an opportunity! One of the best things was the sheer number of institutions of higher learning. I had friends at Columbia, NYU, Hunter, Baruch etc. et al and met Soviet dissidents, engineer geeks, theolocigal students, bidness types, the gamut.

May TeenMidlo make the best decision for HERSELF, which I'm certain she will. I wish her, you and your family all the best life has to offer.

17. Tell her she has no choice, you are her mother and you know what's best for her
like that time when she didn't want to wear a coat but you made her anyway...right?

Or, tell her if she doesn't go you'll send her to live with Matom! :wow:

18. Man, I wanted to go to NYU.
I couldn't really afford it, unfortunately, but I reeeally wanted to go to NYU. I'm still vaguely considering the idea of transferring there within a year or two, but that depends entirely on whether or not I can snag enough scholarship money to cover whatever my student loans don't. I've also considered Berkeley, but it's soooo expensive--I truly don't know whether I could afford that even with scholarships.

Tell TM that we wish her loads of good luck!!

It's not her first choice and I doubt she's going. She's wait listed at that school that will be nameless. Is TM a vocal performance/music major too? It's great when the kids have good options to choose from.

This link has a lot of info about NYU's attempt to defeat its graduate employee union.

but that day was not fun for her, and thousands of others.

Michigan is a great school too, so I don't think she lost anything by going to Michigan instead of NYU, and as a bonus, she got to hang out with me!!!!!!!!

35. My Younger Brother went to NYU, for film
Graduated in 2004. Dad is still paying his student loans - he owes over $100K....but my Brother's back to work now that the Writer's strike is over and he has a couple of development deals working.....but, his twin brother went to UNC Chapel Hill for undergrad and already has earned a Master's in Forensic Biology from GW in DC and has paid off all his loans and just got a job with the NYPD Crime Lab and just took his MCAT.

I do notice enormous loyalty to VT from its numerous alumni here in Maryland......

But, if she's a performer, NYU is the place to go.
