Most Americans (or, as NOLA blogerati sometimes refer to it, "the country to our north -- and I don't mean Canada") do indeed seem unwilling to accept not only beignets, but brass band music, go-cups, stuff thrown from parade floats, and so forth as an integral part of our national culture. Hence, the shameful, ostrich-like response* to Katrina.

2. NOLA is truly a unique culture

I think more people accept the stuff being thrown from floats though.

3. It is perfectly legal to drink on the street in New Orleans

but one thing they will not tolerate is glass containers! Hence, the ubiquitous plastic "go-cup". :beer:
