1. Ah, looks like the Sobu Line in Tokyo |
|
(The trains are color-coded, and the Sobu has yellow cars.)
Actually, I'm surprised that the platform workers are spending that much time pushing people onto the trains, because during the hours when the trains are that crowded, they run every three minutes.
I've actually ridden the trains under those conditions. If a train is too crowded, you just wait for the next one.

2. I was hoping you'd weigh in on this thread; I wondered how common this was. |
|
Especially the pushing and shoving of women - it seems they're not at all concerned about putting their hands all over women's bodies (in this context, not sexually, I mean) in the way we would be in our culture. Is that common?

9. I think this is a big part of the reason why they now have women-only trains |

I saw this the other day, and can't believe it's allowed at all, let alone enforced.

12. ha! that brings back memories |
|
I lived in Tokyo for a few years and being stuffed in a train during rush hour totally sucks. What's really weird is having every inch of your body touching other people but no one makes eye contact or talks so it's very quiet as the entire group sways with the movement of the train.

13. Reminds me of when I lived in Beijing. |
|
Here's a video of what it was like getting on a bus. I remember being the last one on the bus like the guy in this video. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/866229/china_beijing_bus/

14. Beijing sure has changed since I was there for 2 weeks in 1990 |
|
That street looks like something in Tokyo, and the bus looks so modern.
When I was there, the buses were just as crowded, but they were these antique-looking green things that everyone just swarmed onto, and there was a young woman sitting at the door plaintively calling over and over, "Hai you mei mai piao de ren?"("Is there anyone who hasn't bought a ticket?") and everyone just ignored her.

15. Yeah, I remember the ticket ladies |
|
I always bought a ticket. The buses were something out of the '50s when I was there.
