A question for the lounge: How many times do you think Ronnie James Dio saw LOTR
(Lord of the Rings)?

I'm bettin' it's like, over one hundred by now.

And as a follow-up, is he incensed about the omission of Tom Bombadil?

2. Well, alright then, where do you think Mr Dio stands on the "Arwen" issue?
SUre it wasn't the most faithful to the books, but hey she is hot, and he is a rock star--sort of.

4. From our friends Tenacious D...
Dio has rocked for a long, long time,
Now it's time for him to pass the torch.
He has songs of wildebeests and angels,
He has soared on the wings of a demon.

It's time to pass the torch,
You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you.
We're takin' you to a home,
But we will sing a song about you.

And we will make sure that you're very well taken care of.
You'll tell us secrets that you've learned. Raow!
Your sauce will mix with ours,
And we'll make a good goulash baby.
Dio, time to go!
You must give your cape and scepter to me.
And a smaller one for KG.
Go! Go! Dio! Dio!

9. I skip the Tom Bombadil parts...
...at each rereading. Doesn't hurt the plot. I was so glad they left him out of the movie.

(On a side note, I think Tom Bombadil wrote a song for RHCP on their recent disc. "Hey-oh! I hate this song-oh! Tom Bombadil-oh!")

:hi:

The plot pretty much ends at Mt. Doom. Why read further?

Bombadil is important if only because without Tom, there is no escape from the Barrow Downs. No Barrow Downs, no Numenorean blades for the hobbits. Without the magic sword, Merry can't break the spell of the Witch King thus allowing Eowyn to deliver the death blow. Those who only saw the films know nothing of the prophecy of the Witch King or the blades of Westernesse.

Bombadil also highlights the danger the hobbits were walking into. If they could not escape from a simple Barrow Wight without Tom's help, how did they have any chance once they left his realm?

Bombail is enigmatic in that he was able to withstand the temptation of the Ring and exert control over the ring. He could make the ring vanish, he could wear it without turning invisible and could see Frodo when Frodo was wearing it.

I've also suspected that Tom is one of the Valar "gone native."

Yes, I am a Tokien nerd.

10. Which version?
The animated one or the trilogy?

My guess is that he read the books about 4-5 times...that is a lot for a Rock n Roller, especially one that specialized in finger signs.

That is when he named his band "Elf"....pre-Sabbath.

He probably saw the original animated version 100 times.

That is what led to the numerous videos in which he appears with swords of many kinds. He doesn;t fight with 'em...just brandishes them around. This is comical, of course, because Dio is about 4 foot tall. The blade "dwarfed" him. Not quite as bad as the Def Leppard sword in "Rock of Ages", though.

For the trilogy, he probably has it on DVD and when the grandkids come over, he insists they watch that instead of cartoons. He probably thought the swords weren't big enough in the movies....everything too understated.

But of course, this is all speculation. :)
