Is there an iPod car adapter?
i.e. something I can hook my iPod into to listen to over my car speakers? Somewhat an urgent question, as I may be driving 400+ miles alone on Friday.

Help!

2. There's a lot of FM transmitters
you can get to get your iPod to broadcast over an FM frequency...

5. You set the transmitter to a frequency that isn't being used by a station in hther are, and then tur
Or you could just use an old school tape adapter. Those work.

9. Most electronics stores would have them.
They're pretty common items.

20. I've heard that Radio Shack makes a pretty good one
They vary a lot in audio quality but the RS one is pretty good, so I am told.

8. Here's a whole bunch from Target
http://www.target.com/b/ref=sc_fe_r_10_0_162288011_3/602-0562387-4451843?ie=UTF8&node=14234261

You plug your iPod into this transmitter, and set it to an unused radio frequency (a non-station in your area) - this is the frequency your iPod will play on. Then you tune your car radio to the same frequency, then, voila!, you are listening to your iPod over your car stereo.

Here's the only issue with these. For example, 105.3 is a great frequency for me to use in my home town... but if I get very far south, 105.3 broadcasted from Little Rock starts to bleed over, and I have to set my transmitter to a new frequency. So, if you're traveling very far, you'll probably have to change frequencies a time or two over the trip.

4. There are many different types
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 10:26 PM by jasonc
it depends on your car and/or how much "work" you want to do to get it in.

or you can just get a crappy FM transmitter.

edit: you can start here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=MTI0MjE&node=home/shop_ipod/ipod_accessories/car_audio

Monster iCarPlay Cassette Adapter

Do you have a cassette deck in your car?

These wouldn't be hard to find at the usual stores that you mentioned I wouldn't think.

Oh here's one that doesn't need the cassette

11. Does your car have an Auxiliary input?
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 10:31 PM by alarimer
If it does, all you need is a cable that goes from the Ipods headphone jack to the Aux input. Many newer cars (say 2006 and newer) will have them.

But if you don't have one of those, get a transmitter device like the ITrip. It plays through an unused part of the radio dial, usually something like 88.1, 88.3, or something that is relatively static free. You tune your radio and the ITrip to the same frequency and turn on the Ipod.

Best Buy or Target or almost any electronics store will have those devices. Itrip is just one brand, there are dozens. Should be easy to find.

14. as stated below
your car may have an auxiliary input. I had a 1992 mazda that had one. (who would have thought...) If it does, you can plug it right in with an AUX cable. Or you can use an FM transmitter or a tape deck adapter.

With all of these options, you will still have to select songs using the iPod.

12. Thank you everyone!!
It appears that our local Circuit City has a bunch of different FM transmitters in stock, that should work, I think. Y'all are the best! This trip is going to SUCK, and having music will make it much more tolerable. I don't drive with headphones on, not b/c it's illegal, but b/c I don't feel safe if I can't hear ambient noise.

15. Ahh

You know what else I like for long car trips, audio books. They're actually really great. I really like the James Patterson Women's Murder Club, you know The 1st to Die, 3rd Degree, etc. on audio.

some Economics ones.

Actually this trip is going to be kinda traumatic, so I might not mind the soothing sounds of supply and demand :D

13. I have this dude here:

I've had many, they've all been either meh or bleh or superlame. This one actually has amazing signal strength (even in a crowded-signal area) and it also charges while it plays.

18. My Alpine has a wired connector that hides in my glovebox
and I get to control what's playing through the deck, display song names, etc.

It wasn't real expensive. I know you probably don't want to run out and get a new car stereo, but in the long run I think it's a million times more convenient than adapters (I had a few break on me,) and the sound quality is a million times better.

19. I will look into that in the future, thanks
We're getting a new car next winter, and we will upgrade then. It looks like the Ex is flaking out on driving my Mom to her appt on Friday, so I will have to miss class, get up at the break of dawn, cross the state, go 1/2 way back, 1/2 way back again, and then back across in one day. So yeah, this is a sorta emergency situation. I can't be stuck in dead radio land for hours on end, esp. with my Mom who can't talk and will most likely be upset on the way home.

I'm uploading a 9 hour Econ audiobook as I type, just in case. Sigh.
