Ok, so let's say you see a job posting for a really cool job
but you don't see it until after midnight tonight and applications were due by 5 pm Tuesday. Do you bother to go in tomorrow and see if they'll still let you apply? Would they automatically toss your application in the circular file because you're a moron who didn't follow the rules?

If you've ever read my posts you know that I'm dirt poor and I've been thinking about getting a second job so that I can move into a place of my own (what I've tried not to admit to you guys, because I'm really ashamed, is that I was forced to move in with my mother...a 41 year old woman moving back in with her mother, how's that for pathetic? Not only that but I'm literally sitting at my computer *in my mom's basement*. I think that wins some kind of award for the biggest loser on DU)

But anyway, I've been wanting a second job and I was just visiting the local library web site and they're hiring part time employees to check in, sort and stock the shelves, etc. It's a union job with benefits, just 20 hours a week so I could work it plus my regular full-time job. And since I work 3rd shift there wouldn't be any time conflict. They pay isn't great but it's ok but I'd get to be around books, hundreds of thousands of books. And not only that but the people I would work with would probably ALSO be book freaks. How cool would that be? So how stupid would I look if I went in tomorrow and tried to apply even though the deadline was at 5 yesterday? What do you think? Waste of time or WTF, what's there to lose?

1. Go in, have your paperwork ready
and ask. It won't hurt you. And who knows, maybe the job is still open. You won't know unless you try.

Btw, thanks for wanting that job. We librarians tend to dislike reshelving books. At least this one here does

3. I think it would be like a treasure hunt
discovering all sorts of books I never knew about. Like getting paid for going through the books at Barnes and Noble!

4. Don't I know
:)

But by now, that I work daily with books, I am not really looking through them anymore. No time to do that. But I defintely enjoy working with the people and also with the books. To hold a book in the hand that was printed in the 17th or 18th century .... priceless.

5. My favorite job ever was working at the circulation desk...
at my campus library. I did what you would be applying for.

If I were you, I'd totally go for it. You wouldn't look stupid. In fact, you'd look really eager.

Good luck. :)

7. If it makes you feel better
I moved in with my father and his wife almost three years ago, and am still there. I have a nice setup (my part of the house is seperate, kind of like your arrangement), pay a decent rent and I am not ashamed at all about it. It has been such a great opportunity for me to save some money, too.

I really believe in community type living, though, and it seems a shame for us all to be paying so much money for our own little spaces. Not only that, but sharing quarters saves on the earth resources !!

I hope you check into the job, good luck !!

8. Definitely do it.
Unless you're worried about possibly tarnishing your reputation with this library, I wouldn't sweat the late application. In a bigger agency, it might not matter at all, and a late application might be accepted (or never reach anyone who would care), but a small library may be more casual about hiring, particularly for a part-time job.

I don't think you can lose. Join the book freaks, and maybe someday you could work full-time in the library. How cool would that be?

Good luck!

9. Definitely!
Never hurts to try, and you could let them know that you just saw it. But have your paperwork already. Don't bother them with "I want to know before I go to the trouble to fill out an application". That just looks wussy and they will say no. Have it all ready, drop it off today, by hand if you can, and say you just saw the job advert, are excited about it, and that you'd be pleased if they would still consider your application.

Good luck!
