22. I agree with you.
The Flint Hills remind me of the ocean, and there once was an inland sea there. I'm from the east coast, lived in Kansas for 10 years. I've moved around a lot, and find something beautiful in every state I've ever lived in or visited.

7. Kansas is pretty bad.
When I was a kid we lived in Colorado and used to often drive to Ohio to see my grandparents. Once we made it across Kansas, we felt like we were almost there. That state NEVER ends when you're driving west to east. Texas is that way, too. Miles and miles of not much.

8. I crossed all the way across ND once
South to north, and it was surprisingly nice. Gently rolling the whole way, fields of sunflowers, I would go back. It didn't get really flat until we hit Saskatchewan.

9. True about the rolling hills and there is much beauty as to the prairie
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 02:24 PM by Blaze Diem
states, The air is clear and lots of natural untouched beauty in ND..But if you want to see a really FLAT area nothing beats west Texas, where I have stood and viewed the curvature of the earth's surface. The area around Midland is unbelievably flat.

True about the ND winters though. But don't cha know that the residents wouldn't live anywhere else. They like having all that open space to themselves.
And the fishing & hunting is supurb.

& the Badlands of west ND are incredibly beautiful, but you have to actually exit the main interstate to understand why this State joins the heart & heaven to its residents.
As the locals tell ya, "its the blessed awful winters that keep the riff raff out of our hair."

& that's the way they like it.

At least the deserts of Arizona were cool to look at. Utah, or at least the part I went through, was just miles and miles of flat nothing.

12. One more thing..according to the Marathon Oil.com website..there
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 02:38 PM by Blaze Diem
is more oil in the North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana area of the USA than Saudi Arabia. !!! Yep, the current oil boom happening right now along the tri-state borders, is due to the emergence of new technologies in horizontal drilling , necessary since the underground formations where the oil has existed for millions of years is extremely difficult to get to.
Nd, for one, is a State that allows this development but holds the energy related companies to some very strict environmental standards.
So if you need a job in this industry, and want some outstanding wages and benes. here you go. But you'll have to survive the winter at some point.
Thanks
BLaze

14. Sorry to our Buckeye friends but Ohio in my book
I've certainly spent enough time there to know! Driving to Cincinnati from the border of WVA was about a 5 hour drive and we used to ask my Dad how far to your house..and he said, just over the next hill..which was almost true!
(Yes, I'm aware of the rolling hills of Cincinnati and in northeast Ohio but please..Central Ohio....:boring: )

I went to Grayling in 1970 for Army camp. I have a friend that goes to the UP for bird hunting every year. The way he talks it is flat land with scrub trees too, he said you can get lost very easily because it all looks the same. Great bird hunting though.

27. Kansas and extending into eastern Colorado
Eastern Colorado is really glorified Kansas.

I don't like to knock any state but that stretch comes to mind first, based on driving cross country perhaps two dozen times.

The only memorable scenery in that area was the wheel well of my new camper when a flat tire shredded it, late '90s.
