9. USN
We sailed from San Diego through the Canal to Rockland, Maine and stayed for three days anchored in the harbor (on-shore liberty, of course); made stops in R.I., Florida and Mississippi on the way back.

Good question, though.

18. Japan actually. It was on Korean Air so we stopped in Anchorage, then Seoul, then
Osaka. On the way home we flew non-stop from Seoul and it SUCKED! After the 8th hour I almost lost it, with 5 hours left to go. It was much better having that stopover in Anchorage.

21. Thanks! I bet I will too. In fact, we're going with my husband's family and
my husband and I are already pretty sure we're going to go back by ourselves sometime. The family trip is a cruise, which is not normally my kind of thing, but it's the best option for his family. My husband and I like to travel more quietly, away from touristy stuff. So I think once we get a little taste of it on this cruise, we'll be itching to go back and see it for real.

but bring a raincoat, sometimes it's a little damp. Will you be in Southeast or come up here to the main part of the state? I can tell you some nice places to visit if you're in Southcentral.

ed. Never mind, I didn't see your post immediately above. If you're cruising, you'll probably be in Southeast. It's really pretty down there, but you'll probably need a raincoat even more. :)

38. Actually, Blue, when we lived in Seward
we had about 100 cruise ship landings a year. But I think most of those now go to Whittier (where everything is shittier).

But, yeah, I'd bring a raincoat.

43. You are correct, of course...
And we see those Princess buses all over the place toting the cruisers around. I think there are still quite a few cruise ships that come into Seward, but also Whittier. I guess I was making an unwarranted assumption about the Southeast thing -- it just seems like a lot of people take that trip.

The summer tourist business is a big deal for Seward. It's good to hear that Princess hasn't completely abandoned them.

I used to have this view from my bedroom window:

56. The cruise lines are a little irritable right now
because we enacted a law that makes them tighten up on their discharges into the water and also enacted a head tax, but I'm sure they'll get over it.

62. We're taking the Inside Passage, stopping in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, then
Victoria B.C. before heading back to Seattle. I'm fully expecting a lot of rain, but I don't care (although my husband's family might have some complaints about it). At least my husband's family is on board with NOT taking the ship's excursions where everyone is herded around like a bunch of cattle. Of course, they're interested in taking smaller excursions because they're cheap, I'm interested because I hate traveling in herds. My husband and I also plan to break off on our own at least once. We're exploring some possible hikes in Ketchikan that I'm told the cruise ship tourists don't bother taking. That's what I want, peace and quiet and a nice hike somewhere pretty.

It is absolutely gorgeous. Maybe your next vacation to Alaska you can come up this way -- it's a completely different although equally beautiful environment. It's impossible to "do" Alaska in one vacation unless you've got months to spare.

65. I would love to do that some time in the next few years. We were laughing as we
looked at the map. Our cruise will only take us a super tiny SE tip of the state. But that will be a trip to take without high-maintenance relatives and pre-teen girls. :)

73. No doubt...
When you come up here to the main part of the state, your best bet would be you and your husband alone, a tent and some sleeping bags, a couple of fishing poles, and LOTS of time. It can be expensive up here in the summer if you stay in hotels and lodges, but if you don't mind roughing it a little, you can keep costs down and see much more of what the state has to offer. Make your rental car arrangements well in advance and look for good deals.

83. If you can, go to the Red Onion Saloon. It's a pub that used to be
a Gold Rush Brothel. Food and atmosphere is great and there is a museum upstairs.

There's also a seafood restaurant called the Skagway Fish Company. OMG, the halibut is amazing.

I hope you have as good a time as we did. We drove from Edmonton to Whitehorse, Yukon where my parents flew in and met us. We picked up our son at Army Cadet Camp and did the drive to Alaska. We took a cruise on the Inside Passage and fell in love with the place.

Take a very large memory card for your camera (if you have digital) and be prepared to be awed. There is a lighthouse between Juneau and Skagway that is beautiful = just one of the hundreds of beautiful things you will see.

My sister-in-law is from Minnesota. She met my brother in Barrow where they were enjoying one of those "mild winters." You're right, though, our winters down here in Anchorage (or Homer where they live now) aren't nearly as bad as Minnesota's.

57. Lots of snow,
but it is quite a bit milder down there in the winter, generally 10-15 degrees above what we have here in Anchorage. But it's not below zero that often even here. The really cold winter temps are up in the Interior away from the coastline.

61. I finally completed all 50 last year
Hawaii was #50, slightly less than a year ago. In fact, I remember the date I landed in Honolulu, April 15, because it was one day prior to Va Tech. That massacre happened on the first morning of my week's cruise on the Pride of Hawaii, which has recently been renamed Norwegian Jade and transferred from the islands. Luckily I made that cruise when the market was saturated and the prices reasonable. NCL recently pulled another of its ships from the islands, from 3 to 1.

69. I cut quite a few off the list last week.
There's an open door in Michigan if you ever want to check it out.

My List:

Alabama
Alaska
Arizona (MrG had though)
Colorado
Connecticut
Hawaii (MrG had)
Kansas
Louisiana
Massachusetts
Mississippi
Montana
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Oregon
Rhode Island
Utah
Vermont
Wyoming

Last week I was in Missouri and Arkansas, which I had never been in before.

What was amazing is, driving South, James was able to bang off 39 of 50 states on the license plate game.

Hawaii was the last on the list.
