But I've been to both parks for the Angels and Padres on numerous occasions.

8. I have a friend who is abig Angels fan
Some day I'm going to go and visit him (he lives somewhere in O.C.) and make the rounds. Anaheim, Dodger Stadium, and the crazy ballpark out in Lancaster (the Red Sox have a farm team there) where the wind sends the most routine pop-up soaring towards the fences!

23. Oh you know about the Jethawks?
I lived there when that park opened. I didn't go there too much, but for a minor league park it's nice as hell.

28. I've got a Jethawks cap
The F-Cats gift shop had a clearance sale on caps whose teams had changed logos or colors. I picked up a Jethawks cap for a buck. I also snagged caps for the Missoula Osprey, Peoria Chiefs, Round Rock Express, and Louisville Bats.

The Boston Globe runs a lot of Red Sox minor league news in its Sunday sports section. We get updates on the players in Lancaster, as well as Greenville, Lowell, Portland, and Pawtucket. The wind effect out in Lancaster is a favorite topic, since it plays into the SOx biggest farm system concern, a lack of a power hitter to take over for Manny Ramirez in a few years.

5. not very many in my resumé
Let's see:

Kingdome: if you've never seen a game there, that's one I got on you!

Metrodome: home of the '87 and '91 World series champs!!

I don't know the name of the ballpark for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. But I've been there ( in my whippersnapper days) and
saw the games.

And Goss Stadium, home of the Back to Back Defending College World Series Champion Oregon State Beavers.

(their success had nothing(i.e., everything) to do with the Oregon Ducks dropping wrestling and taking up baseball starting in '09
(38-31 btw))

7. I've been in the Metrodome
In 1992, I worked for the Tsongas campaign in the Minneapolis headquarters. One afternoon, I decided to stop in at the Homer Dome and check it out. Amazingly, the staff said to go ahead and take a look around. The grounds crew was in the process of setting up the baseball field for a college tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota.

9. That's cool
The Metrodome sucks.

But it was cool to be out in the CF seats and have Kirby Puckett playing in front of me.

I remember that during the winter that a quickee job that you could do was shovel snow off the top of the inflated roof. Or so I gathered.

No way did I need money that bad. The plasma center was just down the road from the U dorms anyway!

started. It was lovely and empty and strange.

Oh -- I also went to Spring training one year and saw some games at the funny little stadium where the Giants play in Phoenix. That was fun. My buddy gave me a tour of the D-Backs stadium with the neat retractng roof, too. :)

11. The old and new Arlington stadiums, Enron Field, and the Dell Diamond in Round Rock
Enron is now Minute Maid, but I'm not sure I've been there since Enron collapsed.

Arlington Stadium was an old, cheap cookie-cutter stadium, but that's where I've seen most of my games. Saw Nolan Ryan pitch a one-hitter there, saw him strike out 16, watched a triple play. The tore it down and built The Ballpark at Arlington--a beautiful place. Now it's Ameriquest Field. I hate corporate names, but they don't care. :)

Dell Diamond in Round Rock was a double A stadium that's been upgraded to Triple A. The Express, named after Nolan Ryan, play there. I don't mind that corporate name as much because Dell helped build the stadium and get the team to Round Rock, so it's always been Dell Diamond. Kind of like Wrigley.

I've seen White Sox vs. Yankees at New Comiskey (or US Cellular, whatever it is)

I've also seen several Arkansas Travelers games at Ray Winder Field, and at the new Dickey Stephens....

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals (formerly Wichita Wranglers) just started play about an hour from here... I hope to go see the new Arvest field very soon.

29. How is Dickey-Stephens?
I loved Ray Winder Field. Sure, it was old and a bit scruffy, but it had that Fenway/Wrigley funky feel. I especially liked the gigantic screen in center field to stop home runs from flying onto the interstate.

I need to see a game in Springdale, too. I lived in Fayetteville for 4 years while going to law school at UA.

If you get a chance, see a game at Baum Stadium, the Razorbacks home field. It's a spiffy little place, and the berm is a perfect place to stretch out on a warm afternoon!

18. Major League parks
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 05:58 AM by 5thGenDemocrat
Tiger Stadium, Detroit, 1968-99.
Comerica Park, Detroit, 2000-present.
Jarry Park, Montreal, doubleheader vs Philadelphia, 1975.
Wrigley Field, Chicago, doubleheader vs Houston, 1992.
Jacobs Field, Cleveland, last July.
Kaufmann Stadium, Kansas City, last September.

Minor League games (sorry if I don't recall the stadium names). All these happened last summer:
Toledo MudHens (3 times); Great Lakes Loons (Midland, MI) 4 times; Erie Seawolves (Erie, PA); Akron Aeros (OH); Lansing Lugnuts (MI); West Michigan Whitecaps (Grand Rapids). We had planned to catch a game at Columbus (OH), but spent the night getting tanked at a bar a few blocks from the stadium instead. Columbus got creamed in our absence.

Also a spring training game at Sarasota, Florida back in 1990 or so. Pirates at White Sox, if I recall correctly.

We plan to do another series of games this summer -- I'm thinking Columbus OH, Dayton OH, Louisville, Indianapolis and one or two others (say a week to ten days on the road).
John
Accumulating one heck of a collection of baseball jerseys. And I bet the list of DUers who ever made it to Jarry Park is a mighty short one.

82. The only doubleheader I remember seeing at Tiger Stadium
Edited on Sat Apr-12-08 01:56 PM by 5thGenDemocrat
Was against Boston in 1995 or so. The second game was a makeup date which, under American League rules, must be completed once started.
The first game had a couple or three hours of rain delays. The second game started around 10:30 pm and then itself started catching delays totaling, maybe two more hours and finally ended at 2:32 am. That's still the latest finish to a game in Detroit Tiger history.
Then we still had a nearly two hour drive back here to Saginaw.
John
Tiger Stadium was historic and the baseball cradle to several generations of Michiganians. I miss it a lot -- but Comerica Park is a much better place to see a game, concessions and bathroom-wise. Also, the new park is beautifully sited with beautiful views of downtown Detroit (especially at twilight when the skyscraper lights start coming on). Tiger Stadium was about a mile west of downtown and, with the double decks all the way around, gave you no sense of place. When inside the park, you couldn't tell whether you were in Detroit or Dayton or Rancho Malario.

Quigley Stadium, West Haven, CT (West Haven Yankees)
Municipal Stadium, Waterbury, CT (Waterbury A's)

alas, both Eastern League teams are now defunct. I believe the stadia are used for high school ball and such.

79. Amazing how things changed
It's amazing how far the ballparks in the EL and New York penn league have changed in 25 years. When you look at the current parks in Manchester, Norwich, Lowell, Staten Island, etc, and compare them to the ones in Waterbury, Holyoke, etc, there's no comparison. A few of the 1970s-80s places had some character (Nashua with its pine trees in the outfield, Lynn's WPA funkiness, Pittsfield's old school charm), but most of them were, to be blunt, dumps.

A lot of the older parks have been spruced up a bit and are used by collegiate summer teams.

Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 03:54 PM by Cabcere
when I was in high school on a band trip - unfortunately by that time I had developed a raging fever and severe sore throat, so I don't remember much except being miserable and trying to stay warm that evening. One of my friends got lost for a little while at that stadium, though, but we found her and everything was OK. :hi:

Edited to add: Yeah, Turner Field - that's the name of the place. Had to Google it, though.

65. Can't help it
I've hated Atlanta since the late '70s, when they were a .400 ball club but thumped the Dodgers with frustrating regularity. x(

And their fans — when they do that stupid "chop" business, they look like a bunch of robotized cigar-store indians.*

An ancient reference which will no doubt be lost on your youthful ass. :P

52. Just 2... one major, one minor...
Major League:
The OLD Memorial Stadium in Baltimore... saw a 3-game stand vs. the KC Royals when i was 14 (the season George Brett hit .390)

Minor league:
Clark Griffith Park, the home of the old Charlotte Orioles (yep... Baltimore AA farm team)
Saw lots of eventual-bigleaguers there (mom was a fanatic, so we had season tix), but the ones i loved best were Eddie Murray and Cal Ripkin Jr. (Cal Sr. was the team manager for a few years, too)!

58. I remember the smell of beer brewing
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 04:31 PM by BrotherBuzz
Falstaff and Hamm's were both within walking distance of the stadium. The beer schooner atop Hamm's is very vivid in my memory as I remember watching it fill, overflow, then go dark only to be filled again.

61. There was a bakery next to it
When I hear the old-timers talk about it, like Lon Simmons, they usually mention how the smell of bread wafted over the yard.

Another cool little story, from Russ Hodges' autobiography, "My Giants": The first time he was in the stadium, a big sign over the clock in center field was being taken down. It read, "Daphne Funerals — Eventually."

Hodges began the San Francisco era of his book with a reference to that: "Since I don't need anyone to tell me that daisies will one day be planted on my chest..."

Not unlike the stadium itself:

That's one of the saddest sights in the world. :(

74. Kezar Stadium was a gas - we would march across Golden Gate park with coolers
Edited on Sat Apr-12-08 12:53 AM by BrotherBuzz
Security never ever bothered with coolers back in the good old days.

One East West Shriner game at Kezar, I watched OJ play and he really lived up to the Heisman trophy hype.

Playland at the Beach was unique. George Whitney Jr. helped Disney design Disneyland

Disney studied Playland (and other amusement parks) in early 1950s when planning Disneyland. He came to Playland, met with George Sr. George Jr. impressed Disney, who asked to use him as a consultant. Eventually George Jr. hired as the 7th employee of Disneyland. Only person on the Disney team who had practical amusement park experience.

Interesting interview by a friend of mine, John Martini.

55. Only three, perhaps surprisingly
In the majors, Candlestick Park. I still haven't been to AT&T because when I had the $ I didn't have the time, and when I had the time I didn't have the $. :(

In the minors, Salinas (Calif.) Municipal Stadium, literally about 500 times (where I knew such future big-league stars as Omar Vizquel and Jeff Nelson — whose on-field wedding I photographed), and San Jose Muni.

Salinas Muni isn't there anymore as such. They tore down the old grandstand a few years ago. Now it's just a little building with a backstop and bleachers used by a semi-pro club. :(

60. Wrigley Field, (at least 100 games), old and new Comiskey
(I mean US Cellular), Dodger Stadium, Coors Field, Miller Park( Milwaukee--my first and only indoor baseball game--very odd sensation)). Would love to go to Minute Maid in Houston just to constantly refer to it, as loudly as possible, as Enron Field ( its original name). Dukes Stadium, and "The Lab", both in Albuquerque, AAA Pacific Coast league. Dukes were the long time Dodger AAA team, The Lab is the Alb. Isotopes (Fla. Marlins, and named in a newspaper sponsored vote by an overwhelming margin; named after the Simpsons episode Albuquerque steals the Springfield Isotopes away)

Since we've moved to Jersey, we go to Newark Bears games during the summer. Tickets and beer are cheap and the game usually sucks (which makes it even more fun to heckle), but sitting outside on a warm summer night is hard o pass up.

70. The old one in Tampa
where the Reds did spring training. One game they were playing the Yankees, who spring train in Tampa now at Legends Field. George showed up to that one. Hubby knew George in a casual way.
And one in OK where some (really) minor league team played in the 50's.
Dad became a big Dodgers fan when he was at the Merchant Marine academy in Kings Point in the 40's so he saw some at Ebbets Field (sp?). I have Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Wait Till Next Year."

Sure, I was 3 years old at the time, but my mom has pictures of me sitting in the third row above the visitors dugout, so that counts.

Most of the games I remember from my youth were at Riverfront Stadium during the era of the Big Red Machine.

I've also attended MLB games at:
Fenway
Wrigley
Comiskey Park
The Jake (Jacobs Field)
Busch Stadium
The Astrodome - (J R Richard was pitching)
Three Rivers - (Kent Tekulve was side-arming on the mound, and I got autographs from Stargell & Dave Paker)

80. I've seen only three MLB games, both stadiums now gone
Two were a doubleheader in old Comiskey Park, in 1967. I was nine, it was fascinating, especially the two really fat guys in front of us who were continually sucking down hot dogs, peanuts, beer, whatever. Sox vs. Yankees, they split the games. I got to see Mickey Mantle play.

The other was in the Kingdome, around 1981, Mariners vs. Blue Jays. M's won 7-0, boring game. We bought our tickets from a young scalper, about 10; actually, his grandma has season tickets and couldn't come that night, and he said it was OK to resell them as long as Brandma didn't make a profit. Anyhow, it was Fan Appreciation Night, and the trip to Australia went to a seat just a couple down from me. Nobody was sitting there.
