Question for die hard Doctor Who Buffs:
Why does Doctor Who say "Here have a jelly baby" to Davros in "The Destiny of the Daleks?"

I know a jelly baby is a jelly bean and the line is hilarious, but was there some deeper meaning to it?

1. Just part of the Doctor's whimsical, flippant nature and his sang-froid.
Plus, that Doctor (the Fourth One) was a big fan of Jelly Babys and always had a pack with him.

Of course the Doctor would offer the creator of the Daleks a Jelly Baby.

3. Thank you! I love that episode.
Tom Baker is hilarious. I love it when he bugs his eyes.

6. Way to sugar-coat the truth Rabrrrrrr.
Let's be honest here, shall we? The Doctor was a Skull and Bones member--just like Davros. They may have acted like enemies in front of the camera, but you don't offer jelly babies to an ego maniacal creature hell-bent on genocidal supremacy unless you're on the payroll, know what I mean?

2. The jelly babies were an affectation of the Doctor
Patrick Troughton's Doctor (#2) often ate them or offered them to people to disarm them; Tom Baker (#4) picked up on this and made it into a much more prominent running gag to the point that it became identified largely with his Doctor.

4. Because he thinks Davros is diabetic and needs a quick dose of sugar?

Jelly babies aren't quite jelly beans, and for sugar-laden food don't taste sugary at all, and the blackberry flavored ones are the best, but there was no meaning. In the 17th season, the show was starting to get silly. The Doctor offering sweets to a nemesis was one such opportunity. :D

7. Thanks, Hypno Toad.
The Beatles loved jelly babies. People used to pelt them with jelly babies at their concerts.
