they have to cut a hole in my house to replace my furnace
the damn thing is in a little cubby behind my bathroom and in order to replace it, they have to cut a hole in the back of the house. the prehistoric furnace (which the house appears to have been built around) apparently had flames rolling out of it, which explains why i smelled burning every time it kicked on x(

i'm just glad i listened to my gut and turned the damn thing off when i did. the nights are still pretty chilly but that beats my place burning down

1. Yeowch
Kinda reminds me of a car I once had: to replace the clutch, you had to take the CAR off of the ENGINE. Poor engineering. Stay warm!

2. I'm going to do mine in 2 weeks....
no hole in the house but 3 wells, 100 feet deep each in the front yard and a trench 6 feet deep to the side of the house. We're putting in ground source heat pump.

8. It is a high efficiency method of heating and cooling...
it takes advantage of the constant temperature of the soil and the circulating water is either cooled or heated depending on the season. We're estimating we can heat our 2200 sq. ft first floor for about $45 per month and cool it for about the same.

7. I am very, very, very glad
that your house didn't catch fire, and you're okay.

I hope it isn't too expensive to get the new one in there. I hope you're renting and someone else is responsible for that.

Please stay warm, but stay safe too.

9. thanks, thom
i rent, so the whole mess is for the landlords to handle...something for which i am very grateful right now.

there have been a few extra layers during the day and lots of extra blankets at night (not to mention my sweetie and my two cats), so it's more of an inconvenience than anything else.

11. Reminds me of the time my electric water heater stopped working.
I went into the basement to check it out. It had a reset button built into it, which I pressed. I almost electrocuted myself as the damned thing literally shorted out in my hand. The Fiberglas insulation wrapped around it then caught on fire. I had to rush back upstairs, turn the master circuit breaker off (the electric box had been rewired by a madman and nothing was marked) and run back down to extinguish the flames before the house caught fire.

I saved the day but my arm tingled for hours from the jolt it gave me, and I was without hot water for three days until the landlord replaced the bloody thing.

Shit actually DOES happen.
