I'm so enraged as to be almost physically ill |
|
I have this client who has honestly set my teeth on edge since the first moment I met him- some people just naturally do that to you. I never quite knew WHY I didn't like him- he's polite, friendly, he looks strong and handsome, and I just do not like him.
I have been to his home a couple times over the past year to work on his computer, and each time he has had a different dog. The first two got sick and died within a space of weeks of him getting them, one after the other. Riiiight. Nothing there to put my finger on, just a feeling. I don't know him well enough to say anything's going on. Move along.
Today I was there again and he had yet another dog, this time a six month old female mix. He said she'd been sick for a day or two, but she wasn't sick- she was cowering under a table, frightened to death to come out and get anywhere close to me. When I was left alone with her for a few minutes she bolted out of the room crying. I hadn't come within feet of her and I was talking as gently as I could to her to reassure her.
She was also frightened of his small daughter (who was acting loudly and boldly as children do), but she would go to HIM, tail between her legs, nose down and eyes looking upward at him.
Although I can't prove it or do anything about it, it's obvious this animal is being abused. If not by him then by his wife or child. This poor puppy girl is terrified, and I can do absolutely nothing about it.
I told him flat out I thought she had been abused as a pup, leaving the door open for him to say that a previous owner had perhaps damaged her. He denied that, and seemed not to really care.
I do not think I will ever willingly go back into his home- I don't want to go to prison in Texas for assault, and I'm afraid I might coldcock the bastard if I get half a chance, proof or not.
That animal does not have a chance.

1. Is there any way you can report your suspicions to the ASPCA |
|
or a local Animal Control department, or anyone who can look in on that poor dog?
I want to be part of the crowd outside his house if anyone can prove he's hurting animals. x(

3. He's forty miles across town from me. |
|
I have no way to prove anything, and if he's gotten away with it this long it means he's been doing it far longer than I've known him. How can I prove it's actually him from one short visit, since my suspicion is based more on a gut feeling than anything else?

But it would be nice if someone could investigate him. A dog terrified like that is definitely a credible sign of abuse.

5. What a dreadful situation to be in...for you and the pup... |

Is there anyone you know in the neighborhood?
It makes me sick to hear this...and to see you helpless ...
Wish there were something, anything, we could do...

7. It's way way way across town from where I live. |

I know nobody there- it's just another generic middle class neighborhood on the edge of Frisco Texas. Even if I found someone to report it to I'd have no way of proving my allegations. Can Animal Control enter a house without definite proof of some sort?

http://www.sniksnak.com/ac/report.htmlIn Texas, certain individuals suspecting child abuse are REQUIRED to report it to CPS. Too bad people aren't required to report animal abuse, as well. I live in Irving - can you report it to the Dallas ASPCA and DEMAND that this man be investigated? Do you fear reprisal from him? That poor dog.

9. PLEASE - call your local Animal Control unit!!!! |
|
If you call them, and explain your previous visits (meaning having two other dogs who just suddenly died), and THEN tell them about the new dog and how she behaved around you and the owner/daughter, they may very likely look into it.
I know every state is different, but if this guy has this kind of history with dogs, it's doubtful they will ignore your call.
JMHO.
Oh - and
People like that need a good whoopin'.

30. Yes!! Please do this asap! |
|
Last summer my husband and I noticed that two boxers down the street were confined to an area that had no shade and only a cement slab for the dogs to walk on outside their doghouse. It was in the hot sun in the middle of summer. We called our local animal shelter and they were so glad that we called! It's all confidential, and the people there really care and act as advocates for animals.
Please, do this immediately. No innocent animal should have to suffer. And if some dolt abuses animals, the next step is humans.
Call. You will feel better, and maybe save a life.

If they don't follow through, at least you will have tried. Besides, if someone else calls on them, the ASPCA would definitely have reason to investigate.

"it's obvious this animal is being abused."
"That animal does not have a chance."
In light of these statements, what might you be willing to do?

You have the rare ability to quickly identify and articulate clearly the essence of a problem.
You both have a thought process that rather easily filters out the noise to focus on relevant facts, rooting out cause not effect.

18. So sorry, THIS is horrific (not sure I will be able to sleep tonight thinking about it) |

One thing HOPEFULLY by you researching and making your observations known, perhaps if he's getting these pets via the Humane Society they might put him on the list of being 'questionable'. Up here in Seattle, it's not enough to just walk in and pay an adoption fee. They want to know that the adoptive family has the ability to care for a pet. How did your last pet die/references (that's what I've heard at least, all my own pets have been inherited from friends that died).
At the VERY least, you would know that you TRIED. Oh, this is such a sad situation. Please will you let us know anything you've found out? Would give info to anyone else in such a situation.

Sometimes these things take time, but action HAS been taken- Animal Control was notified, and they just contacted me to let me know they will be investigating this person and the condition of the poor animal. Obviously they can't simply break his door down, but I had a nice conversation with the investigator and was able to fill in some of the blanks for him. Hopefully they'll soon be able to remove this puppy from that home.

You have your instincts and should listen to them.
Though have to say, I have a little part spaniel part lab that is terrified of everything except me and the SO. She was born that way, that is why we ended up with her.I've known her since she was born and wasn't going to let her be put down because of her fearfulness. Even after 6 years and never ever being hit, yelled at, not even a correction with a leash Raven still cowers. She loves us petting her but will still tuck her tail and wait until she is at least 5 feet away before she wags it. Hell she has never been yelled at because if you just look at her like she did something wrong she cowers. We've tried socializing her, got pros and in the end it is just too stressful on her. She is happy here with her other fur friends and her two quiet humans so we don't try to force her any more. So there are dogs that are like that out there. Since this man makes your skin crawl and the other dogs disappeared I still think you were right to call and have them checked out. Always better safe than sorry.
