4. I can be...so F.
It really depends on the sport. Snowboarding, Swimming, Biking...Sure. Jogging or Soccer, on the other hand, not so great for overweight guys with 2 bad knees, 2 bad ankles, and a bad hip...all of which may need to be replaced before age 40.

I spent the last three years doing heavy manual labor at night and taking karate lessons on a regular basis.

Now that I'm not doing those, I've been finding other things to replace that with. Most namely lately I've been ice skating on a regular basis, and as soon as I get my tax return I'm gonna get a bike or a pair of roller blades to keep the exercise up once the rink closes for the summer.

I may not do SPORTS, but I'm more than capable of kicking the ass of anyone who tries to claim that I can't be athletic just 'cause I can't catch and throw worth crap. :P

16. Shoto kan with a few elements of (I don't know how the hell to spell it) shuto ru, I think.
Edited on Sat Apr-12-08 12:24 PM by DarkTirade
Mostly shoto kan, just a few blocking styles from the other one.

Unfortunately it's been long enough that I'm forgetting how my katas go. I just need to figure out how they start and then I'll be able to do the rest. :P

I've been practicing in the backyard now that it's warm enough to do so. Feels a little weird to be doing it on uneven ground and with shoes on. I was so used to doing it indoors with no shoes. :) I'd love to find lessons around here and get back into it seriously. I'd love to learn some weapon techniques too. I've done lots of sword and staff sparring with friends, but I haven't had any training in it.

23. We never got up to full sparring
We only did little back and forth drills.

Now the sword sparring on the other hand... that I did plenty of. :) If you see The Animator hanging out here in the Lounge, ask him if his fingers have recovered yet. After a while when we kept whacking each other's fingers by accident, it became kind of our mantra to say, "Sorry. I was aiming for your torso."

For some reason we both had the natural ability to block on the hilt rather than on the blade half the time. Which isn't a good thing when you don't have a rapier-style hilt guard.

33. The sword sparring was outside of karate class, we just did it for fun.
I used to make prop lightsabers and we started with those, then we switched over to bokken and shinai, then we switched over to homemade padded PVC.

Which is probably the only reason we managed to keep doing it without breaking any fingers. :P

13. I think a number of DUers are athletes.
Let's see, off the top of my head...eyepaddle is a master whitewater kayaker, Ellen and underpants (among a few others) are running marathons, lots of martial artists around here. If golf was an actual sport, there'd be dozens more. Good number of folks in the fitness forum lift weights, even seen a couple powerlifters around here. Seen a couple firemen on this board, and they're certainly athletes.

Even I could be accused of doing a little bodybuilding, myself.

I know way too many DUers who are at the very least 'former jock/ettes' who still play for fun, if not currently still participating in competitive sports.

Heck, even i am a former athlete... played assorted sports in high school, and then ice hockey as an adult (ages 25-32), until i got hurt and could no longer play without risking permanent damage.

Edited on Sat Apr-12-08 11:32 PM by Cabcere
but even then, I probably wouldn't consider myself an "athlete"...goes against the vast majority of my lifestyle, y'know? :P I was never that good, but I really do miss rowing. Stupid back injury... :(

Edited to add: I've had a bit to drink tonight, so I apologize if that didn't really make sense.

30. Well, I made an eagle the other day
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 01:55 AM by Awsi Dooger
Nailed a 16 degree hybrid on a hard pan fairway to within 4 feet on a par 5. Damn near choked the putt but it tumbled in on the low side.

In my 20s and 30s reaching the par 5s in two wasn't news, but late 40s it's a rare treat, everything needing to fall my way. Don't let anyone pretend the modern equipment is substitute for youthful strength and flexibility. My drives used to whoosh, now they labor. And the poorly struck irons find the lake, like my fanned 5 iron a few holes after the eagle.

That's about as much athletic ability as I can claim at this age, unless you count free throws and hook shots on a dark unlit court, with neighborhood kids chuckling in the distance.:)
