1. If it's a USB reader, it should plug right into a USB port.

2. What OS are you using?
When I first used a reader with Windows 98SE, I had to scour the internets for a driver that worked.

For XP, 2000, and Vista, the reader plugs-and-plays without a hitch.

Unless you're one of those wretched Mac users, of course...

4. Is it 98 or 98SE?

If you still have the packaging/documentation for the card reader, it should list the systems with which it's compatible. I'm afraid that, if you're on 98 (with no SE), then you may be out of luck (though I can't say for sure).

Here's what you can try for 98SE:

Google the brand/model of your card reader, along with "drivers" and "windows 98SE." Try to find a reputable site, and do a virus scan upon downloading. The file you get should be self-installing after you unzip it, or it might just instruct you to place the file in a certain folder. Thereafter, you may have to reboot before you system will recognize the card reader.

Sorry I can't be more specific, though I share your pain. Our former system ran 98SE, and we have a card reader and three USB flash drives. To date, we've only been able to get the reader and one of the drives to work--even when we download the right drivers for the other two, they just don't work.

Frustrating!
