On balance, is Jeremy Irons a good actor or a waste of space?
The case for waste of space:
Dungeons and Dragons
Die Hard III
The Time Machine

The case for good actor:
.
..
...

Well, I'm sure that there must be one, right?

1. Those were bad movies, period.
He was good as Klaus von Bulow. I forget the name of the flick.

Then again, that was the first time I'd ever experienced Mr. Irons's schtick, so I wasn't sitting there going, "Oh god no. Not the bored European persona again!"

You certainly have a point, Orrex.

8. Great movie!
He does seem to gravitate towards really dark roles though. I think that's what he does best, but many of his films are unpleasant. That doesn't make him a bad actor.

4. That's Ian McKellan as Richard III. Irons wasn't even in that movie.
Irons played Antonio in The Merchant of Venice, (which I still haven't seen; Al Pacino as Shylock!)

13. How could you forget "Eragon"?
Bad films all, but he's done well in others:

"The Merchant of Venice"
"the French Lieutenant's woman"
"Damage"
"Stealing Beauty"
"The Lion King"
"The House of Spirits"
"Being Julia"

I'm sure there are many more...

14. He's a good actor. He just doesn't mind taking parts for the money.
In the end, how can he be a bad actor if people enjoy going to see him act?

Damned uncomfortable movie, where he played a damned uncomfortable...um, person. (I don't want to say "protagonist", maybe y'all have a better word.)

And damn...it made me uncomfortable. But he played the part damned well.

Dammit!

21. i agree
irons is a good, if not great, actor. at times he is brilliant (he was damn good in lolita and elizabeth).

the recent movies listed in post #1 are not good, but his acting was better than the movie.

the man is finding that aged actors don't do well in hollywood- he's doing what he has to. its even harder for older women.

26. The Mission
No one mentioned that yet. The music was fabulous and Irons was awesome. If you decide to rent it -- or have seen it already -- the cliff climbing scene was real. He said that when his foot slipped, the director and producer nearly went into cardiac arrest.
