The bitter beer thread
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 06:11 PM by sasquatch
I'm sorry but the initial bitterness of the hops is made up for by the fruity aroma and delicious aftertaste that the beer provides afterward. It's real beer that people in Ohio, Illinois and Pennsylvania can depend on when times are rough. Because the beer that major corporate brands provide has never satisfied the thirst of Americans for the past 20-30 years and have been constantly lied to about how they're going to quench their first, but in the end they never do. So here's to strong, flavorful, rich beers and their "yes we can" spirit.
:patriot:

BTW I am an Obama supporter and if you don't like this post you need to get laid sometime.

5. I love bitter beer! Lagunitas Brewery up in Petaluma, CA (about an hour north of me)
makes some excellent ones. The Brown Shugga Ale, which is unfortunately only a winter seasonal, is an amazing mix of sweet and bitter at 9.9% ABV, with a hefty helping of brown sugar cut with one hell of an alcohol burn.

7. They are a great brewery, no doubt.
Don't believe all of the haters here trumping up their west-coast crap. For good beer, the midwest is where it's at: Great Lakes, New Glarus, Bell's.....

8. There is one west coast beer I'd like to try, Alesmith's Ale. Bells also a
midwest brewery makes fine a ass kicking Ale called Two Hearted Ale. It's very hoppy with a good grapefruit rind finish. Not for the faint of heart.

Dogfish Head out of Maryland turns out some good drinks. Try their Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA

Good resource.

I never drink to get drunk. Don't like the feeling, but I love the taste of a well made beer.

9. I know those beers well
Dogfish head is something unto themselves. Their beers are fantastic, but hard to compare to other things.

I like Two Hearted, but I'm not sold on it completely. I think the greatest Bell's beer is Oberon (it used to be called 'Sol Sun' - it was even better then... some lawsuit forced them to change the name). Their Expedition Stout is fantastic, but I only thought so when I had a chance to have it on draft; it didn't work as well as a bottled beer. MMmmmmmm now I want beer.

11. I like the lighter Ale of Great lakes. It's more of an everyday beer.
I will have to try Oberon because I like Wheat beers. Great Lakes Holy Moses White Ale is not bad, but I will take Hoegaarden over it any day.

14. I just looked at your profile - you're in kentucky!
Are you anywhere near Lexington? There's a beer there called (I think) Kentucky Bourbon Ale. The brewery makes two other beers, and this one is their darker ale aged in used bourbon casks. Man is it good. Whenever I go to visit my sister there I have to have one.

You definitely should try Oberon if you can get it. It's not really a wheat beer, because it also uses some barley malt. I think it's a guarded secret exactly how it's made. New Glarus Spotted Cow Ale is similar, but Oberon has a sort of citrus fruitiness to it. If you like white ales like Hoegaarden, Bell's has a good Winter White that's seasonal... probably too late for it this year. While it is good, I don't know of many American breweries that can pull off European styles as well as the real thing. I haven't tried the Great Lakes white, but I would guess that I'd agree with you on it - good, but not as good as the real thing.

15. Yes, I live in Lexington, and I do drink Kentucky Ale Bourbon Barrel Ale.
If your sister is involved with the Fayette Dems I may have worked with her.

They made a hemp ale for a while. It was very good, very light.

Kentucky Ale is not bad, a nice everyday beer.

18. well, we'll have to get a beer the next time I'm there (probably this summer)
I doubt my sister would be in that group, because she's the mother of a 3 year old, and that seems to take a lot of time. She's also really active in her church (I have no idea what it's called, so I don't know if there would be any connection there).

I can't imagine what a hemp ale would be like, but I learned recently (probably common knowledge to others) that hemp is in the same plant group as hops, so maybe it would work.

from the trauma of the terrible twos.

Just as long as she is an informed voter, that's enough.

I hadn't heard of that one, as I guess they're pretty new (I've been out of the US for a year now). It looks like some of my favourite bars in Chicago have, and I try to go there a few times a year, so I'll have to try it the next time I'm there.

10. Favorite good beer: Augustiner Edelstoff, which isn't very bitter. If I want something more...
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 10:12 PM by JVS
bitter, I'll go for a Pilnser Urquell or a Czechvar (Budweiser in Europe).

Favorite bad beer: Gotta love a Schlitz, Old Style or a Black Label. If I want a lighter taste, I go for Iron City Light or Old German.

Favorite compromises. Huber bock and Huber are decent for $6.99 a 12 pack. High Life is ok when money is short, but if I can get Schlitz or Old Style for less, then forget it.

always good enough for me. I haven't tried it since it left Ky. I hope they haven't screwed it up.

19. where do you live that huber bock is still $6.99?
I remember that that's what it cost in Michigan back when I was in the 90's, but even by the end of the decade I think it was about $10. Still, I think it's really a good beer. In my experience, you have to spend more than twice, and probably more than 3 times as much to get something as good.... shit.... it might have been like $10 for a case of 24 now that I think about it. I haven't had huber in a long long time.

There used to be a great beer on the west coast called Lucky Lager that was $6 for a 12 pack of 11oz bottles (like the red stripe bottles). Unfortunately, they stopped making it a year after I moved to California, but I guess those 200 - 500 bottles I drank in that year will have to be acceptable for life. *sigh*

25. I had to give up Bass Ale
when I found out they used Isinglass (fish guts) in the process (it's used as a filtering agent; don't ask me how they ever figured that would be a good idea to begin with!)

I like many of the microbrews and have discovered one locally (to Texas, that is) that I love: Real Ale :)

I'll have to remember to email them about whether they use Isinglass or not...

27. Yes, Shiner is a standard of Texas
at least for those of us Natives that don't drink Lone Star or any of the other macro-brewed "domestics". Shiner has a great variety to choose from, too. We also have a brewery right here in Houston called St. Arnold :)

And about a mile away from where I live is a brewing supplier, DeFalco's. If I ever want to get into brewing it myself, that's where I'll go. My father did so for about ten years, starting from a kit I got there. He made some great beers. Now he's more of a connoiseur :)
