I do miss temperatures in the 30s and 40s. It was over 100 today, and from what I heard it was near 100 yesterday (I was in San Diego at Sea World yesterday).

9. The weather
Across Australia, the weather was crazy. March (the beginning of autumn] was harsher than February (summer). In Adelaide for example, for the first half of March, almost every day was above 35 degrees celcius (forgive me my ignorance, but I cannot translate that into fahrenheit). We were comparatively fortunate in Melbourne, still we had to deal with a number of days reaching up towards 40.

I prefer the cold to the heat, it's easier for me to cope with.

14. We do, thankfully it is not a humid heat so it does cool down some at night
We have not cranked on the A/C yet. We did open the patio door last night to get the night air in.

We will be installing a "whole house" attic fan later this spring, which will help blow the heat out of the house.

15. Leaving the doors open
At times we employ such a measure... in the past, it would make me nervous, thinking what if an intruder paid us a visit? But it never occurred, thankfully. We live in a pretty quiet suburb. Now I rarely feel iffy about it.

It's been milder here for some weeks, though. It seems we finally paid the bill.

Fahrenheit from Celsius...

Take Celsius, multiply by 9, divide by 5, and add 32. 35C equals 95F.

17. We had the a/c on today
I wasn't in the mood to be all sweaty and the cats still have their winter coats. I knew it was time to turn it on when I walked down the hallway and saw all three of them laying belly-up on the hardwood floor with their paws splayed out.

The forecast says tomorrow will be hot, but slightly less so...and then we're in for a major cool-down (highs in the low 70s) by mid-week. In other words, back to normal! :P

22. About the forecast
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 11:14 PM by bixente
In this country we have a nifty program which gives attention to network programming all around the world. From Romania to... the United States. I recall one episode which said a range of networks cater to the broader interests of the population with regular forecast updates. Is it true that Americans are obsessed with weather forecasts? :D

23. Depends on the region...
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 11:19 PM by huskerlaw
the Midwest is absolutely 100% obsessed. I'm not gonna lie. I grew up in Nebraska and the forecast is conversation topic #1 with each and every person you meet throughout the day. I believe it is that way throughout a large portion of the middle of the country.

Here in CA, not so much. For 2 reasons, basically. 1) the forecast very rarely changes, 2) if the forecast does change, it's WRONG. So really, there's no point. But that doesn't stop us from bitching about the weather as it's occurring. It also doesn't stop those of us who are transplanted midwesterners from talking about the weather/forecast far more often than anybody else. :P

On edit: I believe the reason for the midwest obsession is two-fold. 1) the farming background...farmers live and die by the weather, so it's a natural topic of conversation and that just got passed down to subsequent generations who wouldn't dream of being farmers and 2) the weather in the midwest is volatile and you're very well served by knowing if you're likely to die in a blizzard or a tornado when you leave the house in the morning.

25. "Is it true Americans are obsessed with the weather forecast"
I knew there would be something not-quite-right about that query. Too broad, too much a label, I guess.

The description of the mid-west kind of reminds me of Melbourne. Here, people who frequent the city do at times comment at experiencing four seasons in one day. And indeed, last year when I set out it was raining; by the time I stopped off the train, there was bright sunshine. A saying derived from this is "perfect one day, shithouse the next," a play on "beautiful one day, perfect the day," which relates to Queensland. :pp

Our farmers are having difficulties as draught has been a long-standing problem for some years now. Indeed, more so than in any other state, Melbourne's dams are comparatively empty. I believe the last reported capacity was in the region of 30-something percent. Of course their crops are suffering and water restrictions have been enforced some times over. Our showers are to last three minutes or so. Vegetable prices have been jacked up considerably, although I don't wish to complain excessively as the plight of the farmers seems more concerning than our situation.

30. Actually, that does bring up a good point...
I don't think that Californians are generally obsessed with the forecast *except* when the forecast calls for rain. At that point, it becomes a huge deal. CA is also in a drought and has suffered from some really horrible wildfires recently, so rain is both desperately needed and also dangerous (potential mudslides in the burn areas). Also, rain is rather uncommon even in normal weather years, so it's an event.

I guess the best way to put it is that Americans discuss the weather/forecast whenever something out of the ordinary or different is occurring with it. In California, that doesn't happen so much. The temperature is usually steady. But then there are days like today, where it was 39 C in April. Weird, and therefore noteworthy.

The weather in the midwest, on the other hand, often swings greatly from day to day. For example, in Nebraska today it was snowing lightly and about 7 degrees (celsius). By Tuesday, it's supposed to be 23. So they always have something to talk about!

35. Can't
The stuff from our two-day "event" was sleet, snow, then more sleet. Despite all the precip, only an inch or two hung around until today here in the northern suburbs. The Cities were BARREN of snow, except for the crusty shit the plows pushed weeks ago.

There was a thin layer of stuff today that worked well once the sun warmed it up into slush, but by sunset large patches of the lawn was bare of snow!

How about I send you a giant blood-sucking mosquito instead?

38. Hi Kitchy!
Yep, it's been a real cooker this past weekend.

My livingroom hit 92 degrees at 4PM, yesterday.

I had to bring out the fans, open all the windows on the shade side
and just literally sweat it out.

It was a good day to give the kitties one of their rare kitty baths.
They yowled and complained at first, but later appreciated the
cooling effect of wet fur when the temps. hit the high 80's.
Of course they dried in 30 minutes or less.

It should be better today and Tuesday the temps should drop
back into the high 60's.

then--- by Thursday they will climb back up into the 80's.

Welcome to our wild and wacky SoCal temperatures!

:hi: :pals:
