what's your take on waifish men?
dunno if they are as noticeable in small town america. they sure are prolific in principal cities.

you know what i'm talking about: skinny guys with longish, unkempt hair; usually with straight legged pants that seem to cut off circulation to the ankles; a whimsical scarf; oversized aviator glasses; and an often ironic t-shirt as the basis for their costume.

to me they look like elves.

i guess since they seem to be mostly young twentysomethings, maybe they took harry potter too seriously.

or something.

1. That particular style of dress = big minus for me.
However, slender pretty men = big plus. :P

5. me too, although I like my girly men to be able to be strong, just not macho
and my tough girls to be able to be sensitive.

It's complex. Or is it? :) Actually, I guess it's not.

6. as someone who has worn scarves, vests, and hats for a long, long time
I resent it becoming an aspect of hipster culture.

But what can you do?

On the other hand, while I am not large, I am hardly waifish, so....

7. Wanna-be rock stars, I think...
...I see 'em every day in NYC. Most of them tend to remind of the Gallagher brothers of Oasis fame. Or similar hipsters. Yet most of the ones you see today can't...quite...pull it off, yeah? Trying a bit too hard. Datasuspect, you forgot to mention the facial stubble. That's often part of the uniform as well. I must say that, as a man tending toward middle-age, I occasionally envy their skinniness. Usually makes me think, "Damn, I have to get to the gym today." The haircuts often verge on the Rod-Stewart/The Faces/Oasis look. But I can always tell who's cut it themselves, who spent $35, and who goes all the way with the proper $250 haircut. Most of 'em are just fooling themselves.

By the way, if I see you in Noho with an "ironic" t-shirt, at this late date, I assume you're either an NYU student or a tourist.

I braid my hair, though, and I don't match the rest of what you said. For what it counts, I think I'm a pretty decent guy. ;)

15. There is this personality that goes with them...
around here at least, that they are not subject to rules of respect and decorum. We're talking the most ill-behaved insensitive rude classist asswipes to walk the face of the earth...and they always seem regardless of age, to be paying with mommy's credit card and driving a BMW belonging to Daddy. What's better is when they say shit like "Ohmygod, I'd so never work here!" and treat me like shit for working in food service and then six months later they're back applying for a job because their parents cut them off and I get to laugh at them for not having any work experience.

Needless to say, but I want to stomp them:

16. Just your typical indie-rock kid?
I mean, I don't think I really have a take on them. They tend to have better taste in music than the population at large, believe it or not. But I'd be hesitant to paint them all with that brush -- I can go to an indie-rock night at a club in Miami, and every damn guy in the room is dressed like that. Doesn't mean they're al the same outside of their fashion sense.
