3. No, you're not. Just file for an automatic extension. |
It's easy and no big deal at all. When you find the missing W-2 you can file your returns. If you send them the money you think you owe (if any), there aren't any penalties. I have done this several times because I'm so disorganized, never had any problems.

5. Guess. If you normally get a refund you're in good shape. |
Even if you don't, send 'em a check for whatever you paid last year. It will probably be close enough. The worst thing that could happen is that you might have to pay a penalty, which would be pretty small anyhow if you file your returns as soon as you get a new W-2.

7. Can you find a paystub from your last paycheck of the year? |
Pretty much everything you need will be on there, normally.

6. Do you have your end of the year pay stub? |
Yeah, I know, if you can't find your W-2 why would you be able to find your "final" 2007 pay stub? But, if you can find it, it will have all your "numbers", i.e., total (various) taxes paid for the year, total income, total state and local taxes paid, etc.
If you file an extension; do you have your previous year's return? Look to that to see what you should make for a payment so you don't get hit with penalties and interest; presuming your income is comparable this tax year to last tax year.
The IRS (and your state) is more concerned about receiving the money than the forms. File extension, send money (if you owe) by deadline, do paperwork when you can find it or request a duplicate W-2.

8. I think to qualify for the economic stimulus check you have to file ... |
...by April 15. That's a few hundred bucks' incentive to find it, eh.

9. You'll still get it as long as you file by October. |
It'll just be a few weeks later arriving if your return isn't processed by the 15th. Note that's processed, not filed. Her check will go out a bit late no matter what.
