Radio Lady: Where does this quote come from. "Whenever God closes a door, somewhere He opens
a window."

I'm writing a comedy speech to give at Oregon Public Broadcasting on Thursday night 9/17 and need this quote sourced.

Is it from the Bible? Do I remember it in "The Sound of Music"? Do you even believe it?

Thanks so much for your help on this busy day.

1. It is not from the bible and I believe its origin is from the Sound of Music...
and you couldn't make me believe it if you tried. Sometimes all doors close firmly and that's all there is. It is what it is.

22. Reading it in a different way, it doesn't say WHERE or WHEN the window will open.
Existential BS, I fear.

2. I did a quick google, and it appears
to come from The Sound of Music. Sounds sort of Mother Superiorish.

3. Google says Alexander Graham Bell
When one door closes, another opens; but we often look
so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we
do not see the one which has opened for us.

6. gives me the same feeling when I hear the saying,
"God, or HE, or whoever, doesn't give us anymore than we can handle, or endure, or something like that.".
wrong.

Some people HAVE MORE THAN THEIR SHARE of grief.. and fear, and hunger, and such.

11. Absolutely
Some people come in for their share of more crap than any human being can reasonably be expected to handle alone. People who believe this tripe make God look like some sort of sadistic jerk who enjoys watching people suffer. Better to admit that the Universe is monstrously unfair at times, and then try to act in ways that minimize the pain of others.

16. And Job is a co-dependent wimp
I never did like that chapter.

Come to think of it, the only parts I was ever fond of were Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs. Some great poetry there.

26. You've really touched on something there.
I have two friends, one of whom sees God's hand in obstacles and the other of whom regarded his plan to emigrate as blessed by the universe because things went smoothly during the transition. I don't hold either viewpoint, to say the least, nor do I care for Randy The Last Lecture Pausch's claims that brick walls are there to prove how much one wants something, or that karma and dreams all work out if you live your life "right."

I'm more a Pierre Wolff and Rabbi Harold Kushner type: Life can break your heart, but that doesn't mean sad events come from God, and one of our challenges is to face our anger and sorrow.

7. Agreed, it's ridiculous

9. I always thought it was Helen Keller
But apparently she said this: "When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us."

Looking it up on the Google (which, btw, is www.google.com, in case you were curious) it appears that your quote came from The Sound Of Music.

14. I'm going to use it in a funny way, but with three attributions, it looks like it doesn't belong to
anyone in particular.

Sound of Music

Helen Keller

Alexander Graham Bell

OK. I get it. I'm working it into my routine. If I actually come up with something, I'll post it in my journal by Friday.

Thanks for the help. Zounds, you folks are really amazing.

Cordially,

Radio Lady in Oregon

20. So this God person is actually encourageing Breaking and Entering is he?
"Well your Honor, I was walking along and saw this house... out of curiosity I tried the door. It was locked, I was gonna just keep walking, but the window on the far end was open, and I thought to myself 'self, God must want you to climb in through that window'. Then once I was inside I thought 'Wow, look at all this stuff... God must want me to help myself' How the hell was I supposed to know that all this stuff belonged to some other bloke, and God was just having a go at me?"
