DU Photoshoppers - avatar help needed... |
|
I'm trying to make an avatar out of a small .jpg image of the following parameters - 74 X 75 pixels, document size = .25 inches X .25 inches, and 300 pixels/inch. I've tried playing with the different parameters but everything I do makes the image too large to upload or too fuzzy to be recognizable. Any suggestions? I tried using the parameters of a similar extant avatar image, which was 48 X 48, .667 X .667 inches, and 72 pixels/inch - but my image waws still too big...

Bring the 300 down to 72 DPI for a start. That's all you need for the internet. 300 is good enough for brochures.
You have to keep the images size under 1k which I found extremely difficult.
But then it will work.
Best of luck!

2. You're on the right track, just keep fiddling with it... |
|
If you like, the IrfanView software (freeware, just google it) is very helpful in editing your pics down to size and decreasing the color depth.
Hang in there, you've almost got it!

Ugh...it even looks good in the "Options" page where all my profile info is displayed after editing - why does it look crappy here?

5. How do you change your avatar? |
|
When I tried it only gave me a list.

7. There should be an option to upload your own... |
|
Under "Options", then "Edit Your Profile", then under "Avatar Image" it should say You can choose from following images or upload your own. To use your uploaded avatar, add the following to your avatar box: personal/107614.
The images have to be less than ~1.5 kb, though...

was the limit in my options (at least, that's what they SAY)! maybe if you donate more, you can upload a bigger avatar :)
also, heavily compressed jpg's can look pretty bad at 48x48. i'd like to know more about reducing color depth though. i had to go to grayscale to keep mine under 1k :(
edited to ask: if i put in personal/107614, does that mean i get your avatar? }(

6. Another thing to try is |
|
to use the lowest file quality setting when saving as .jpg. It doesn't really result in a bad pic, it just increases the compression of the .jpg image.
