So I think your standard of "gays can joke about it but straights cannot" doesn't work either. I don't think that is a very good standard anyway, since by that standard a closeted gay could be as homophobic as he wanted and it would be ok.

I would add that sarcasm and parody is one of the best defenses against bigotry imo and if we stifle it a tool against bigotry is lost.
