Anyone else getting Passover Coke this week?...
Edited on Wed Apr-16-08 02:07 PM by calipendence
Still at stores now. Look for the yellow cap on 2 liter bottles. Probably will run out shortly as this only comes out during Passover.

What's good about this stuff is that it has regular sugar instead of HFCS.

I might have a blind taste test between regular coke, passover coke, and imported Mexican coke (that has cane sugar instead of HFCS) at our Democratic Club meeting a month from now or so. Drop me a personal message if you want to attend/help on this.

Look for the yellow bottle cap to find them...

1. I didn't even know they made Passover Coke
I have had Mexican coke though (made in Mexico, also with real sugar) and it is much yummier. I'll have to go see if I can pick up some Jewish coke. :9

24. R U kidding? My Jewish daughter doesn't buy ANY soda drinks.
Just grape juice to simulate the wine. I forgot about Passover completely. Guess it just passed over me.

I've got enough to worry about with our house on the real estate market. The silence of the lack of any possible buyers is deafening.

Oh, well, just until the end of the month.

Then we can breathe easier again. The house looks GREAT -- clean and clutter free (just don't look in the closets too much--I'm still working on them)!

Please don't spill any Coke of any kind on the beige rug!

Thanks,

The Management

are the luckiest people on Earth!

Why is corn syrup not kosher?

4. I think that its because its made from corn, but I'm not Jewish so I don't know the details...

But definitely sucrose (as in Passover coke), or cane sugar (in Mexican Coke) is a lot better for you than HFCS, which is linked to early onset of diabetes, and its wide prevalence in soft drinks and other products like cereal now is likely the cause of many kids today having diabetes compared to the rates back in the pre-HFCS days.

8. Yep, it's the corn
When it comes to the kosher for Passover rules, corn falls into a special category called "kitniyot". While not strictly listed as non-Kosher in the scripture, these foods are usually considered to be off limits during Passover by observant Ashkenazi Jews. This is because some rabbis centuries ago noticed that while these products are not forbidden, they look and sometimes taste like the forbidden stuff. So a person keeping kosher could eat something they thought had rice flour in it (OK), but it actually had wheat flour (not OK). So to be on the safe side, these kitniyot foods (corn, rice, beans to name a few) are forbidden during Passover.

Also, while a Jew cannot even have any of the strictly forbidden stuff (called chometz) in their house, they can keep the kitniyot stuff in the house for purposes other than eating (think cornstarch baby powder).

Bear in mind, this only applies to devout Ashkenazi (Eastern and Northern European) Jews. Sefardi (Middle East, Southern European and Spanish) Jews do not oberserve the kitniyot rule.

Jodog, whose conversion classes start this fall!

21. Cool!
My partner and I wanted to convert once, but the synagogue board rejected us because "they never had a couple that wanted to convert before" and we were both unemployed. We volunteered to do anything at the office, like mow the lawn, type, answer the phone, or whatever for 40 hours in lieu of annual dues, but we were rejected by the board.

The rabbi wanted us to convert but the board didn't.

22. Did anybody mention they're supposed to turn you away?
Some synagogues stick with the old tradition of turning would-be converts away twice to test their sincerity. Maybe you could try again :)

33. Rocky's right
My friend, Rabbi Dan, warned me abut this. Try at least 2 more times. Did the rabbi tell you directly that it was the money issue that sank you? I'm a little surprised the board wasn't willing to accept services in lieu of dues. My research found that to be a pretty common practice. Have you tried any other shuls in your area?

5. If you're in California, you'd probably have the best luck finding them in Albertson's
I know that's where I found most of what I found earlier today at. I got some at Ralph's after talking to a Coca Cola guy stocking shelves at Smart and Final, who said that Ralph's probably got them by accident.

... until today when I stocked up on some of the kosher coke.

I'm really curious to see whether people prefer the Mexican coke or the American kosher coke in a blind taste test. It would be interesting to see who does "the real thing" better.

28. Mexico tried to "even" the playing field but the WTO said "no dice"...

Since the U.S. was subsidizing the HFCS-based soft drink exports to Mexico so that they in effect could "dump" these exports below price so that Mexican made drinks couldn't compete, Mexico tried to enact a tariff on imports that didn't use cane sugar for sugar. WTO said that was unfair (of course it's corporate soul ignored that the U.S. was in fact starting the "unfair" trade with its subsidized competing products!)

And yes, it was delicious.

Even after Passover, I'll have ready access to bottles of Mexican Coke, but those 2-liter bottles do make it a lot more convenient. And cheaper, too.

29. Do they make it in 26-ounce bottles?
Let me explain: In the very old days, a drink of Coca-Cola was six and a half ounces. The powers that be at the Coca-Cola Company found out that Jewish people in New York City liked to have a drink of Coca-Cola with their dinners...so, to save them money, the company introduced the King Size bottle, which contains 26 ounces--exactly four standard-sized drinks of Coca-Cola.

'Course, us dumb-ass gentiles who lived on the West Coast didn't realize that, and figured one person was supposed to drink the whole bottle himself. This took a while, but you could do it. (And nowadays you wouldn't even think about it, what with 20-ounce bottles considered a single serving and 44-ounce fountain drinks being available at every convenience store.)

Look at it this way: if they're making a beverage designed around the needs of Jewish people, they should sell it in a bottle that was originally designed around the needs of them.

I haven't had Coke since I gave up HFCS, so this'll be a treat. Does it come in anything smaller than a 2 liter? Is it still yellow caps on the 20oz. bottles that I should look for.

35. I think there are cans too, but I didn't look for those...
The yellow caps are easy to spot. Like I said though they might be "hiding" in the back of the shelf, perhaps from store employees who want to buy them later or something like that.

And if you don't get these, many Costco's now (not sure if its just on the West Coast) have imported Mexican coke now as a staple. Those are pretty decent too.

Jones sodas, Virgil's Root Beer, and a few others are also good, though it's cool to be able to get the "REAL thing" when it comes to coke which isn't normally available to us any more now since the 70's.
