I just saw the movie "21." |

It sure was a waste of potentially great material. What you get is a weak-kneed "casino" movie that could have been much more interesting. I found the protagonist, played by Jim Sturgess, to be too dopey to be so smart as the lead "card counter" or even to be an MIT student. I like Kevin Spacey, as the evil professor, but that's probably because I just like to watch him work. Lawrence Fishburne brought a refreshingly full character to his role and that was nice to see.
Lots of flashy Las Vegas scenes (I hate Las Vegas) and dreary Boston scenes. Kinda depressing, really, in its lack of nerve to do something just better than "phoning it in."
Can't recommend this one. Too bad. I think it could have been better. It was, after all, based on a true story of MIT students who "brought down the house."

1. ""Bringing Down the House" is an excellent book - fascinating |

I'm wary of the movie for all the reasons you state, and I'm a Spacey fan too.

card counting is kind of boring, i guess, because whenever writes a book or makes a movie about it they always seem to feel a need to exaggerate and out and out make stuff up, i was on a different team but you can get the money more efficiently w.out a lot of the drama
i know a guy from the (supposedly) original mit team (there are a number of mit teams) but he had a stroke recently and i don't know if he's had a chance to see the movie, probably got bigger things on his mind at the moment
