Does anyone who is a teacher here know if an individual teacher can get an account with turnitin.com without the school having to set it up?

1. My experience with turnitin.... |
|
We use it in my department (history), but it is shit for catching plagiarism.
I have more luck googling phrases from papers that jump out at me.
I required my students to do turnitin one semester. After that, I didn't require it of any later classes.
I usually bust 12 or more for plagiarism out of classes of 60 students. Using just google.

I wondered how well it worked - some of my professors have used it. And the rate of plagiarism you cite is pretty grim - do you think it's intentional or is a lot of it people who are just clueless about the ethics of citing other works?

but I always talk with students individually after I bust them.
Some...a minority...are truly clueless. However, when they're in their senior year of college, they should know what constitutes plagiarism.
And copy/pasting entire paragraphs from websites without citing, and just stringing them together and calling it a research paper is clearly intentional plagiarism.
I think the problem is that they wait til the last minute, and then they realize that they know nothing about the assigned topic, so they google and paste.
I explicitly tell them, "Do NOT EVER use wikipedia on a paper in my class, not even with citations" Yet, lo and behold, I'll have five papers plagiarized directly from wikipedia.
