Springsteen band member dies....Danny Federici......
Edited on Thu Apr-17-08 10:19 PM by Bennyboy
Bruce Springsteen's Friday night concert at BankAtlantic Center has been postponed because of the death of a longtime Springsteen bandmate, a spokesman for concert promoter LiveNation said on Thursday.

News of keyboardist Danny Federici's death was announced on Thursday night at Springsteen's official Web site.

"Danny Federici, for 40 years the E Street Band's organist and keyboard player, died this afternoon, April 17, 2008 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City after a three-year battle with melanoma," the Web site said.

Federici, 58, was not touring while he underwent treatment, but had made a surprise appearance on stage at a March 20 Springsteen concert in Indianapolis.

LiveNation spokesman Woody Graber said a Springsteen show this weekend in Orlando would also be rescheduled, but a Monday concert in Tampa would go forward as planned.

Graber said no makeup dates for the Sunrise or Orlando shows have been announced, and he had no information on refunds for ticketholders.

2. The Springsteen thing has always been about family...
...that's why solo projects like "Nebraska" were accepted by fans as part of the journey, but his decision to use a "different" band on "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town" and the issues surrounding his R&R Hall of Fame induction (Bruce as a performer or Bruce AND The E Street Band) stirred mixed emotions.

I remember a friend turning me on to "The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle," the second album. I never cared for "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J."...still don't, thought he tried too hard, too much of a deliberate effort to be a "wordsmith" and "be Bob." But on the second album, "Sandy" jumped right out of the grooves and demanded attention. That's when I knew Springsteen had staying power.

The whole showmanship thing, the interaction with the band onstage, the careful marketing and image crafting (let's all remember that Jon Landau, his manager, did double duty as a "rock critic")...yes, Springsteen's worked outside of the E Street Band, and every time he "came home," fans and critics sat on the hill and watched the sky in eager anticipation of the Aurora Borealis.

The band lost a family member, and because Federici's sound was key to so many songs, his presence will continue to be felt whenever those songs are played.

R.I.P. Danny.
