A few months ago I applied for a job as an environmental analyst with a company in Sacramento.
They called me back today to see if I was interested in a wetland delineation project. Vernal pools. Outside Chico, California. May. June. July. August. Hundred+ degree days.
This is exactly the sort of project that made me apply for non-biologist jobs in the first place.
I've done three months of vernal pool surveys in the Valley during the summer before, and it was HELLISH.
What should I do?

There's only so much water a person can carry at a time. :(

7. Invest in a Camelback and do it. |
|
I'd take a *true* environmentalist over what passes much of the time these days.

Yeah, you're right, it's better to have a real environmentalist.
The problem is I don't want to be a dead environmentalist. Heat stroke is a real concern out there. :(

14. That does sound really gross... |
|
but it might be worth it, depending on your goals and needs.
If you really need a job, what's your alternative? If you really want to do environmentalist-type work, are you willing to deal with the weather in order to do it? That kind of thing.
Make a list of pros and cons.
And if you decide to take the job, invest in some equipment to keep yourself safe in the heat.

I am about 1.5 hours from Chico, in the foothills...still warm in the day, but it cools off at night...something about being near that large heat sink called Clear Lake... you could visit the cyanobacteria (gives the lake that greeeeen color)
ed to add: CSU Chico, Class of 1981.

19. It's 90 degrees (and humid) here in Texas from May through Sept. |
|
I spend a great deal of time out in it. And then I spend the rest of the time working in our un-airconditioned boat barn. You get used to it. The humidity makes it feel much hotter than it is. I've never had a problem with heat stroke though I am always a little dehydrated.
