Tonight I had the great privilege of seeing Arlo Guthrie perform
at UCLA Royce Hall. He is on a solo tour for the first time in many years. He performed a range of numbers, covering all the favorites as well as newer material. I was delighted and surprised that he performed 'Alice's Restaurant' for us, as well as 'Coming Into Los Angeles,' 'City of New Orleans,' 'Motorcycle,' and 'This Land is Your Land.' He also played some instrumental numbers, songs inspired by Katrina and the Soviet war in Afghanistan. All of this surrounding and interwoven with his down-to-earth humorous storytelling. It was an evening to treasure.

2. Yes, very much so
and he performed some of his songs.

Woody was a compulsive writer, and left mountains of lyrics behind. Arlo, as well as many other musicians around the world, have set some of these to music.

17. I saw Woody Guthrie perform in 1975.
It was a great concert. At the time I remember thinking "He's so old". Now I'm just about that age!

When I was young, my slippers were red
I could kick up my heels way over my head
When I was older my slippers were blue
But still I could dance the whole night through.

Now I am old and my slippers are black
I huff to the store and I puff my way back
But never you laugh, I don't mind at all
I'd rather be huffing than not puff at all.

--great Woody song

20. Ummm ...

Sorry to break it to you, but Woody died in 1967.

Perhaps you had a little more of the 60s than you thought? :-)

4. Yes on both counts
I don't know him personally but the sweetness shines through. And he was a riot.

6. He did 'My Peace'
Woody's lyrics, his music; and 'This Land is Your Land,' and, uh, if any other songs were Woody's I don't happen to know it.

8. He came to campus my freshman year
and I'm still kicking myself for not going to see him - it was only $3 I think, but I was tired that evening and decided to just stay home and chill. :( (In my defense, I was very musically naive then, so I didn't really know what I was missing...but still, I wish I had gone.) :banghead: Ah well. I'm glad you got the opportunity to see him, though - sounds like a great concert! :hi:

11. Same regrets, different artist
I have never had the opportunity to see Arlo (oh if only I could), but when I was in college I skipped the Spring Weekend concert by Stevie Ray Vaughan because it was early in the morning (I had been up all night as part of the entertainment committee) and at a far-flung edge of campus. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

10. I saw Arlo in Sacramento in 1989

At the beautiful Crest Theater. What a great entertainer that man is! I still wear that concert shirt once in a while. :)

15. YOU CAN GET ANYTHING YOU WANT!
At ALice's Restaurant-except Alice!
Way cool that you got to see him. In the early 70's, I knew a guy that could play that entire song- no problem, ahhh.. those days ..don't they almost seem like some wild dream!??
