Since a conversation with a charming Jehovite who was slamming double martinis last night
I've done a little research and discovered that drinking is not necessarily taboo for Jehovah's Witnesses.

I guess all the Jehovites that I've ever known (departed grandmother, and several of her offspring and grandchildren) just weren't drinkers.

1. So they don't have birthdays, but they can drink?!
Odd, that.

I always pick up the Watchtower from outside the door of our building on Sunday mornings, and read it on the way to weekly grocery shopping. My favorite cover story so far is "Blood...Why So Important?"

:D

3. When my dad was young, he used to have to fight his mother to
get appropriate medical care for his siblings:

5. That just boggles my mind...
Looking at the list of all of the prohibited procedures...Wow. I had a couple friends who were Witnesses back in the day. As soon as they turned 18, they became total hellions.

7. It was the blood doctrine that finally made me wake up and leave
the JW religion; embarrassingly @ 36 years of age, but better late than never.

Blood, sacred, so don't use it to save a life. Huh?

I can't believe I spouted that shit.

8. Alcohol no, but drunkeness is taboo
Somehow, over-drinking is not nearly as frowned upon as smoking, or things they consider sexual sins.

Even so, the congregations rarely have any raging-drunks but they do have plenty of closet-alcoholics.
