I'm making a birthday cake for our roommate's birthday tomorrow. He said he wanted an orange cake with cream cheese frosting. Not a huge problem at all. I love baking and this is right up my alley. But they didn't have an orange cake mix at the store, so I bought a yellow cake mix.
My question is: Can I add orange juice as a substitute for the water in the cake mix to make it more orange-y?
Thanks in advance for all the advice. :)

I'm not even near a tennis court
I'm really in yer puter talking to you now, did ya know that?
I om okay, okay, just fine... well I have a splitting headache and I've taken some things for it :P
Otherwise, I'm seeking damages from well, from no one
I have had a pretty good day except for this headache that has taken up the second part of it
I went to the breast cancer, Susan G Komen race for the cure with a couple of women I work with and we joined up with a team from the hospital i work at. We walked in a parade, had people applauding us, felt awesome, then we walked for the cure, got a lot of free stuff, including some pink eveready bunny ears.
Check the Phoenix pic thread,
how are you?

I'm hoping that one of the women who took pics uploads some soon because there are a bunch of the three of us :D
Now what was I saying?

I can't wait to go over and see the bunny ear picture. I can imagine that it's 10x better than the wizard hat.
Did you take some ibuprofen for your headache? That sometimes help. ;)
Feel better, friend.
Going to look at the bunny ears now.

13. Bummer - zest has such a wonderful smell |
|
I guess I was thinking of zest because an hour ago our house was filled with it. We're making a cheese cake that called for lime zest (plus a bit of lime little juice). I can't wait until it has chilled properly.

I wouldn't have even thought of that because of the frosting.
Thanks! You can come have a piece if you like. :hi:

8. You'll get the best flavour from a bit of finely grated orange peel, |
|
rather than juice.
It will probably work if you use juice, but it will alter the result slightly. The cake mix already has the baking powder in it. Raising the level of acid could produce a difference in the leavening or a slight off taste.

The acidity was something that my husband mentioned, so I thought I might find some useful baker's advice.
I wish he wasn't so against the orange zest. x(

You don't have to make any other substitutions. That will do it.
Good luck!

I've used yellow cake when I couldn't find orange and it still turns out very good.
Hope you like it! :)
Orange Dreamsicle Cake
1 pkg orange cake mix 1 pkg (4 serving size) orange flavored gelatin 2 eggs 1/2 c. vegetable oil 1-1/2 c. water 4 oz. cream cheese softened 3/4 c. orange juice 1 pkg (4 serving size) instant vanilla pudding mix 1 tablespoon sugar 1 can (8 oz) crushed pineapple, drained 1 container (8 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed
Preheat oven to 350F. Coat a 9x13" baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
In large bowl, beat together the cake mix, gelatin, eggs, oil and water until well blended. Pour into baking dish. Bake about 30 min. Remove and let cool.
Make frosting by beating the cream cheese and orange juice. Add the pudding mix and sugar; beat well. Stir in the pineapple until well combined, then beat in the whipped topping. Frost the cooled cake, cover loosely and chill for at least one hour before serving.
Optional: Garnish with canned, drained mandarin oranges.

My first thought, when you said he wanted orange, was "Use pumpkin!"
I like pumpkin.
