http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv0-9Wi713oIMO the best to ever lace up the skates in the NHL. He had all the tools and used them to revolutionize the game. I was truly blessed having grown up in Boston, watching this great player. Enjoy Hockey Fans!

1. He was something else. |

He played before my time, but you have to respect the masters.
Along the Boston lines, I was at game 7 when Bourque won the cup in Colorado. If I weren't such a Flyers fan, I'd wish that Boston had won it with Bourque there, but since I am a Flyers fan, I don't want Boston to win any game they play unless it's against the Rangers or Devils. :-)
I was lucky enough to be an Avs season ticket holder for a few years so I got to see Sakic, Roy, Forsberg for a lot of games.

One of if no the greatest. I at some point lost my way with Hockey. Just didn't keep up with it any more. But I do remember him, saw him play against the Flames in the Omni when I was a kid. Long LONG time ago. Thanks you for the vid and reminding me of that, it may have just slipped away forever.

4. I watched that game on TV when they took the Cup after so many years |
|
I was living in Cambridge at the time and fairly ignorant of hockey but it was a sweet shot. And it was fun watching Boston celebrate endlessly

5. Learned to love hockey at my grandfather's knee... |

and promptly fell in love with Bobby Orr (and many other Bruins of the late 60's and early 70's!). He was just amazing to watch (on Channel 38!)- a pure, natural talent. I remember reading books about him as a kid, and my eyes ands ears still perk up whenever I see/hear his name. My biggest treat of the great Sox home opener this year was seeing Bobby with the Stanley Cup one more time. My husband gets jealous ;)

I saw him play as a Hartford Whaler, when he was over 50 years old. Absolutely amazing. :toast:

9. Did more to change the game than anyone, Gretzky included. |

Before Orr defensemen rarely even went into the offensive zone (Hull and a few others not withstanding). Orr's stats are mind boggling, including winning the scoring title twice (no defenseman has ever won it once), his unreal plus/minus rating, and on and on. Like one player said near the end of Orr's career, He was better one one good knee than anyone else was on two good knees.
On top of that he's a true class act, even now. He gave back his Chicago paycheck because he felt he didn't play well enough to earn it.
At a Pro Am golf tourney in the late 90's I took my nephew, a big hockey fan, to see the NHL players in the event. After the 10th hole I asked a guy with Orr if he could sign an autograph for my nephew. Orr called my nephew over and let him drive in the golf cart with him for the rest of the tourney. We caught Ray Bourque in the parking lot after, no one around, and asked for an autograph. Bourque said, "No, I got to be somewhere."
Guess which player made a bigger impression on my nephew. :)

12. Cool story about Hull and Jerry Cheevers. |
|
The Hawks and B's are playing, late in the third period, Hawks up by five or six goals. Hull comes screaming down the wing, puts his head down and unloads his killer shot. He looks up as the puck sails into the open net, as Cheevers moved aside to let it go in. As Hull skates by Cheevers said, "Hey, you could have hit me with that."

11. I grew up in Boston. Of course I do. |

:-) Those were great games back then with Orr, Esposito, Sanderson, et al. Went to the Stanley Cup parades in the city both times they won. In later years, I got Orr's autograph at a charity event he was at. One of my mother's prized possessions was a hockey stick autographed by Orr.
