10. I'll bet it is...
our BIGGEST treat was to go to NYC during Christmas season, look at all the window decorations, and THEN, plug the nickels into the machines to get hot cocoa....

WOW -- what a trip this pic takes me on....

15. what I recall...
I grew up on Long Island and the trip into "The City" was by bus and subway and took about an hour. The bus ride was nothing to speak of, but I always LOVED the train ride. Now THAT had a smell, as it raced through the dark tunnels. Not a bad smell, but just one that stays with me lo these many years. Jesus, I'm feeling like a fossil right now!!

After we froze our asses off looking at all the Christmas windows, we'd head over to Horn n Hardart's. I recall it being all back and white, VERY bright inside, bustling, and somewhat noisy because you'd be feeding in coins, and then the little doors would slam when you took out your "goodies". I only remember cocoa and hot apple pie, but I'm sure my Dad didn't let me get away with eating just that! Well, maybe he did.... Honestly, I don't remember the smells -- more a visual and audio experience. And grateful to be warm again.

Thanks for asking. Maybe monmouth can verify my recollections, and add to them.

Mikits :hi:

:-)

That's a great picture. Can you imagine seeing kids dressed well in public these days? (Or their parents?)

17. Very cool photo.
I especially like the two lads in the front row on the right -- one has his arm around the other and is mugging for the camera. Then there are the two little girls off to themselves on the far right, all dressed up to go to the movies.

Simpler times.

Thanks for sharing.

19. And the price was only a nickel!
Nowadays, the average price for a movie is $10, for a usually shit movie.

And people wonder why I haven't gone to a movie theater since 1994?
