Need suggestions for good vegan cheese. |
|
I know there are some different brands out there, but I'm in new territory here, so any suggestions are appreciated.

1. What style of "cheese" are you looking for |
|
I don't really have any recommendations but I know this is a key question so I'll ask it now to save you some time later.

No, but MrSG is trying to cut out dairy to help his allergies, so I'm searching around for some vegan alternatives for him. Picked up some Silk today; it's not bad, actually. Thought I'd get some suggestions for cheese also.

6. You're in luck: only recently have vegan cheeses that are actually good hit the US market. |
|
I can personally recommend Cheezely, which is from the UK, and comes in a lot of flavors (I've only had the sharp cheddar, some friends smuggled me a package a few years back) and Teese, which is a brand new product from Chicago Soydairy, and so far only comes in mozzarella.
In Seattle, you might be able to get one or the other at Sidecar to avoid shipping (okay, I used the google, they have Cheezely for sure, maybe not the other yet as it's really new) or you can order over the intertubes. I don't see anyplace in WA that sells Teese for home use, but apparently you can score a pizza with it across the street from Sidecar at Pizza Pi. (The nearest place I can grab a pizza with vegan cheese is Oakland, so I'm officially jealous.)

Vegan cheeses have been fantastic here in the US market. You just have to suspend the idea of taste OR melting. One can *maybe* have one yet not another. Or maybe neither. Or maybe...no, let's not think about it.
Oh, shut up.

10. Those were bad, dark days. |
|
Talking about the vegan cheeses of yesteryear, I feel like really old school vegans talking about the days when all the soymilk came in powder, and was horrible, and how excited they were when edensoy came out, and they could have soymilk that was actually pretty good, but they still had to walk uphill six miles in the snow in Chuck Taylors ('cause they didn't have no fancy pleather shoes back then, and we whippersnappers don't know how good we have it) to get it.

Possibly also your virginity. Again. Y'know, in case it grew back or something. Just to be sure. Shut up. :P
