There Will Be Blood was robbed. |

I know, I know: welcome to 2 months ago.
I finally got a chance to watch the movie last night. I liked No Country For Old Men well enough, but I think TWBB was superior in just about every way. Acting, cinematography, writing, direction. I didn't have high expectations of Mr. Anderson, but I think his film is going to hold up much better over the long run.

*spoliers*
What was the point of killing him with a bowling pin, though? And this is what I don't get about people saying Plainview wasn't a villain . . . uh, he committed murder twice out of sheer petulence and was a general piece of shit to the kid he raised? VILLAIN!
*end of spoilers*

I thought the Oscar winner should have been called "No Country For Old Bores", so I guess I can relate.
The theme of conflict between religion and capitalism (with religion being forced into submission) worked for me and seems an appropriate allegory for our times. Also, I enjoyed the fact that it was such a twisted rags-to-riches story that treated excessive greed as the pathology that it is. How often does Hollywood admit that money doesn't make everything better, having it doesn't make you a good person and the pursuit of success can drive you down a path of personal destruction?
In my opinion, Daniel Day Lewis gave the performance of the decade. His final few scenes were perfection. Miles above what any of his peers have turned in lately. He had some great, memorable lines and he delivered them with absolute precision.

6. Not really, it got what it deserved, which wasn't much |
|
It was a very stale film, I found myself unable to care about any of the characters.

I thought it was a very good movie, but not as good as No Country For Old Men.

was a bore to me. I thought even Sweeney Todd was much better.
The nonsensical weapons, gimmicky haircut, boring opening narration and final scene w/ Tommy Lee Jones all added up to a film that felt weak and fake. I thought the Terminator had more depth than Javier Bardem's villain. Woody Harrelson was funny but his character served next to no purpose. Two central characters were ingloriously disposed of off screen. I guess it wasn't so much bad as just a mostly forgettable film going experience for me.
The funny thing is that I love most of the Coen brothers' films and I hated both of the Paul Thomas Anderson films I'd previously seen.

Guess we'll have to agree on this :)
Also, I liked Sweeney Todd.
I just thought the revelations about Lewis' character in There Will Be Blood were a little flat.
