My 18 Year Old Kitty Has an Abcessed Tooth! Got Any Advice?
She's on antibiotics to bring down the swelling, and took blood test to see if she's a candidate for Dental surgery.

Any information would be very helpful. Thank you.

1. Can you get her pain meds from the dentist?
I had an absessed tooth a couple of years ago, and it's the single most painful thing I've ever experienced. Probably the best thing you can do for her while you make a decision on how to treat it and/or let the antibiotics run their course is try to bring her pain level down. Poor kitty. :-(

3. Be very careful!
One of my kits had an abscess, and the antibiotics weren't quick enough. I don't mean to worry you, but the abscess broke into her head and I had to let her go a week later. I'll keep you and kitty in my thoughts, and give us an update on her situation.

At 18, she might not be a good candidate for dental surgery. That's a very senior citizen in catdom. It's not so much the surgery, but the anesthesia which is the problem.

I'll keep my fingers crossed though, but please update us when you can.

8. My old 18 year old...
cat had to have all but his canines removed - I took him to a vet who specialized in feline dental work and he pulled through like the trooper he was, even though he was old and had kidney problems - he lived another two, wonderful years before he finally said "adios".

If you can afford it and vet says Kitteh can handle it, I say go for it!

9. **vibes**
No advice, though. I bet the antibiotics will help a lot. She could get over this and have some good years ahead :loveya:

10. Kitty Is Feeling Better and Eating!
She still looks like a chipmunk on one side, and she hasn't forgiven me yet, but that's an improvement.

14. That's great!
But if antibiotics for kitties is anything like antibiotics for humans, be sure to complete the full course, even if she is feeling better. Of course, I'm sure the vet already told you. ;)
