Kitty is in her 24th year--yes, that is correct. I was there in 1984 when kit was brought into the house. She is a pretty little thing, never weighed more than 6 or 7 lbs. all her life, even climbing onto the roof as late as last summer. She has always been an indoor/outdoor cat, though, and that never changed.
She's gone deaf, but she doesn't go far when she goes out, just around the house.
Yesterday, the dog across the way got out of his yard, and came over and attacked my mom's cat. Because of her deafness, she didn't hear him coming. Mom's kit began having blood in her mouth after the attack, and my sister said it was at least a half hour before the cat calmed down.
She's still not eating, though she is drinking milk. She's not meowing, either. Sis thought she had hurt her tongue, but it appears that her throat was hurt in the attack. She said she'll wait until tomorrow, and if the cat still isn't eating or meowing, she's going to put her to sleep.
I told my sister she needs to bring the vet bill to the owner of that dog and make her pay for it. Debby said that the little dog doesn't get out anywhere himself, though he gets fed, and that's about it. So the dog is suffering from abuse himself, it seems, but fuck, man--that kit never harmed anyone in all of her years, and I'm upset about this like you wouldn't believe.
I think it's a shame, but I think the owners of that dog should be held responsible in several different ways--one, for the attack on my mom's cat, but two, in the negligence of their own dog. I've known too many goddamned animal owners who don't have any fucking decency about their animals and treat them like shit. There are many reasons why I support animal rights, and this kind of situation is only one of many.
I think that if someone is going to own a pet (or be owned by one), that the responsibility to that pet is a lifetime commitment, no matter HOW long the pet lives (or until something happens to the owner, which can't be helped).
Regardless of how old my mom's cat is (and it's been a long, happy one for the most part), she has been an integral part of my family, and this kind of unprovoked attack is simply sickening.
