animal(dog) behavior help would be appreciated, aggressive dashund- bad owner
Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 05:54 PM by caligirl
Hi,

I am having a problem with an owner of a dachshund who lets her dog bark her way from the front door out to the street early morning and late evening daily, about a 100 ft, its constant and loud. This is a nine unit 3 story townhome arrangement comprised of three buildings separated by the driveway. So it can be a bit of an echo chamber. This has been going on since Oct 06. We have ignored it, hoping she would wake up or others would say something, two have including a nasty fight early one morning last month, but can't anymore as the dog is acting aggressively toward our dog more so now,is often off leash, has stood in our front doorway scratching the pavement, barking and shaking her head at our front door. She is 3 years old and spayed. She has moments of good behavior but the owner does nothing about the bad behavior that includes walking up to residents and a child and barking. Today I was unloading my dog across the street from the owner with her dachshund who were walking on the sidewalk when the owner allowed her dog to go nuts barking, jumping off the curb, pulling and basically wild. My dog was still in his crate and quite and has never acted aggressively toward her dog, he's a giant schnauzer and he just stands there and looks at her like 'dah, whats your problem?' he's a knucklehead who never learned to lift his leg, has been to obedience classes and did well, we still practice. I wish I had asked the owner (President of our HOA and my neighbor)to curb her dog. But a, she is clueless about dog behavior, and b, she is clueless about her own behavior. I am close to sending her a letter then complaining to animal control. We have leash laws both in our city and the HOA, she ignores them. We don't ignore the laws, we have a big dog.

1. Call your local Animal Control.
The dog's constant barking falls under "public nuisance"
and could be a sign of neglect/something worse at home.

Make noise!
&
Good luck.

4. thanks, we have a leash rule, and despite my being in
the garage grooming my dog this afternoon, she let her dog wonder by barking off leash. She just told her dog in a carefree voice she was just too noisy. The dog is coming into my garage. Tonight we will look for a noise rule in the HOA rules. One good thing, she left with her dog after I started taking a picture of her off leash in front of my garage.thanks

2. does your HOA have a provision about animal noise?
I rent a condo, but the HOA for the condo (which we're bound by as tennants) specifically states that there is NEVER to be any animal noise AT ANY TIME, and that if there is animal noise (dogs barking, etc) that the home owner (or whoever is living in the place like renters) will be fined on a Per-Day basis that the noise occurs.

If the HOA is ignoring your complaints then you need to find out WHY they're ignoring the complaints. SHe being the head of the HOA is not an excuse to forego previously written rules and regulations.

Also, calling animal control is another option, as is calling the police if the dog is barking after, say, 10pm and before, say, 7am. Continue to lodge complaints and call the police every time the dog barks at unreasonable times of the day and night.

Start a paper trail of complaints. Write her an official letter that is mailed to her certified, so that you have proof she received it.

If the dog STILL Continues to bark, then you can approach the HOA with the number and times of complaint calls, official letters you sent to the police dept and animal control and her.

5. I am looking at the HOA rules tonight for that noise rule. I am a bit
concerned about her attitude, she can be a spiteful person.Since my dog gets restless and barks for a bone once in awhile she would no doubt turn him in too. However what she is allowing is a considerable difference.
Thanks you.

3. Call Animal Control ANONYMOUSLY!
If she's the prez of the HOA, the repercussions against you for complaining might be severe, as she sounds like she's lazy enough and feels she's privileged enough to flout "the rules" to begin with instead of taking the time to train - or control - her dog.

Our dog is a knucklehead that barks at air outside the door, always has, no matter what training techniques we used. Now that she's 12 years old, it's even worse. We have always gone out of our way to insure she doesn't bother the neighbors - especially when we aren't at home, but it takes constant attention and effort.

But call Animal Control or your community's Noise Abatement program (some police departments have one)- that's what they're there for when it comes to stupidly noisy neighbors.

6. they are closed today, but I am talking to them tomorrow. She let her dog
off leash and she barked at us this evening, even trying to walk into our open garage, had my dog on the grooming table trimming him.

7. It's a bad deal
Because there are no bad dogs - just bad dog owners.

And some people might have a bad reaction to the person that calls animal control. But it just drives you nuts - I have a neighbor that can't handle her dog, so I know how you feel.

I'd get a empty dish soap bottle filled with water and zap the barker...

8. Doxie's are hounds..........
doxie's love to bark every day, all day and at everything if allowed. They always have to be reminded to behave because they are stubborn that way...........definitely have a mind of their own. Some of the problem is the breed. They are hounds............hunting dogs................barking is part of it. The dog is doing it's job. They were bred to take on badgers so trust me your schnauzer's size won't intimidate the little weeny. :) I would urge a non combative discussion with the owner about dog training. A book on training doxies specifically may make a nice gift and open some productive dialog on the problem.

she is fine complaining about others, but can't take it the other way around. She isn't objective about her own offenses. Oddly though she won't get close to our dog when he's on the ground.
