HELP! Suggest a mindless novel for me to read for my flight on Wednesday. |
|
I'm really nervous about flying. So, I need a book. I'm into historical romance novels right now, and I need some help. I've read everything by Kinley MacGregor that I can find. Any suggestions? THANKS! Duckie

Have fun! Are you doing anything cool? We're going to go see Penn and Teller and the Blue Man Group. Skip, my husband, really wants to see the Star Trek experience at the Vegas Hilton, and we're going to go eat at Quark's. Then, lots of shopping. Duckie

35. Honestly, I have no idea what we're going to do. I usually try to schedule every last minute which |
|
keeps me from having fun, so I didn't schedule a thing, going to try and play it by ear. I'd like to see Love and the Blue Man Group. I'm also curious to get my "cheese" in and see the RatPack review. I'm sure I'll be plenty busy. I'm a foody, so I'm curious to try some of the high end celebrity restaurants. I'm so excited to go, this is my first time, and I have no idea what to expect. I set up a Flickr page so that I can send pics directly from my phone and share them realtime with friends.

But if you're looking for mindless material, I suppose you could read anything by Hannity, Coulter, or Malkin.

just make sure you don't confuse that book with this one (it's a good one, but certainly not mindless). http://www.amazon.com/Chalice-Blade-Our-History-Future/dp/0062502891

20. Just walk into any shop at the airport and buy any book at random. |
|
This almost guarantees that you will have a mindless novel. But be just a little careful. I made this mistake once -- needed a paperback to read on an airplane, bought the first one with a halfway interesting cover, and discovered too late that I'd bought one of the "Left Behind" novels. Eww. I read a little bit of it and decided I'd rather just listen to the engines for the rest of the flight.

The Innocent Man by John Grisham? True legal suspense tale. Given your connections to (J)Oklahoma you might enjoy it.

28. I just finished Jasper Fforde's "The Big Over Easy." Very amusing, and an original idea. |
|
The basic premise is that the characters in nursery rhymes are real (sometimes they know they're the subject of nursery rhymes, sometimes they don't), and there is a "Nursery Crimes" unit of the police to deal with crimes related to these characters. The unit is headed up by Detective Inspector Jack Sprat, and his assistant, Mary Mary. I can't recommend it highly enough.

30. It's not historical romance really |
|
But the novel by William Goldman, The Princess Bride, on which the movie was based, is a fun read.
I would also suggest the Harry Potter books, which are quick and fun, and while the first couple are aimed younger, the last 4 are more complex.
And lastly, I would suggest M.R. James, who was a 19th century writer of horror, which allows your imagination to run wild, without lots of gruesome graphic descriptions. The best horror was written that way. I get more out of a Poe, a Matheson, and a James than I do out of a Stephen King or Dean Koontz.
Yeah, like I said, no historical romance, but some fun reading.

Laugh out loud funny, and mainly essays/vignettes that are easy to put down and pick back up again, but are really compelling when you're reading them. I find him to be perfect when flying.

34. I don't think wasting time on mindless novels is a good idea, so I suggest the following |
|
Easy to read, but also well written and worth reading, is the Golden Compass.
Keith Snyder's books are also great. Their sort of detective novels, except that the detectives are just a group of 20-somethings who are into music and computers and get caught up in stuff. The books are very creative, well-written, and sometimes laugh out loud hilarious.
Might be tough to find those by tomorrow, though.
