Every marina in the world has a bulletin board with somebody trying to sell some boats, and sometimes there are real deals. That way you can find out if you really like it before you buy one.

Even better, take sailing classes at a sailing school and learn to do it right, and find out if you really like it.

7. One hull go slow

I worked around multihulls for a decade or more and came to understand what sailing was all about. Early on, I spent many long days playing movable ballast on the smaller ultralight monohulls, cool and wet. Yuck! Once you tag a ride on a cat or tri, it's had to go back to the slow boats.

23. I sailed a Tornado for about one hour

Wet suit, booties, trapeze, the whole works, and I was, like, totally worn out. I was trashed the next day, every mussel in my body ached. Playing with those things are best left to the young kids.

I'll stick with the forty-footers, they generally have a reasonably dry cockpit. Twenty-two knots with a four foot roster tail, that's something to experience! The acceleration is incredible, too, it hard to describe the feeling of being pushed back in cockpit by the force, or being up on the foredeck and have the boat pulled out from under you feet. I ALWAYS worn safety harness.

to replace the Sunfish my cousin and I managed to sink, and that is not easy to do! My uncle owned a 40+ boat for awhile, eventually sold it.

I've sailed mostly Sunfish and Hobie cats, with some larger boat experience. We own a very used 18-foot cabin sloop

ps: By the bye, if anyone's interested in the America's Cup boats (from the Dennis Conner era) there are a couple that are mooring in NYHarbor, downtown Manhattan, near the WTC site. You can book passage for a short outing, couple hours I think, on some of the fastest sailboats there were....
