The price is right and I have a new TV now.

How different will the picture be.

1. I have one

My parents bought it for me for Christmas in 2006 and it helps. With a normal DVD player, my HD TV showed dithering in areas with a lot of black (to a degree that was noticeable enough that a friend of mine thought something was wrong with my then fairly new TV) and the upconverting player got rid of that problem. The picture looks a little sharper, too.

2. Thanks Rod H. for the info.
I have a new 19 inch LCD widescreen tv, like to get the best out of the TV.

3. I have one. HUGE difference over my regular DVD player.
I don't think it would matter on a small-to-average screen, but my tv's (note: NorCal-ism ahead) hella fuckin' big, and on a regular DVD player the pixels looked very large and the picture looked kinda chunky and cubist.

Once I got the settings figured out- apparently my tv and my upscaling DVD player were both trying to change the aspect ratio, and I wound up with a picture that took up maybe 1/4 of my screen until I got them to play nice with each other- the picture was freakin' beautiful. I haven't noticed any appreciable difference between the upscaled DVDs and HD signal from my cable company or with the picture from my Dad's HD-DVD player (yeah, he bought a few months too soon.)

Mine's a Pioneer, it was a gift, but I think they're pretty inexpensive now.

4. The price has come down.
Thanks for the info.

A certain store has one for under $50 on sale.

We do have a much larger tv so I think the new dvd player would work out nicely.
