Mine would have to do with where I have hair that I have chosen to keep and where I have hair that I rid myself of.

2. Me too. Could you imagine the scrutiny?
I have given money to a rebuplican candidate for personal reasons.

I am screwed.

My parents were arrested during the 60's for anti-war activism.

I am toast.

I love election years.

5. Real life expreience
I am an elected official, so I've faced this sort of thing.

There's a local "political gadfly", a former city official, who has me in the crosshairs. I used to practice law in the same building as this guy, so he thinks he can expose all sorts of dark secrets about me. His current threat is to expose the fact that I take antidepressants. Funny thing is, I've been pretty open about that fact. I figured out long ago that if I was open about it, it took the fun away from the creeps who would use it as a political weapon.

Beyond that, it's pretty mild stuff. My grades in law school sort of sucked, but so did Joe Biden's, and he did a nifty job of keeping Bork of the court.
I was arrested at an anti-aprtheid protest, but if anything, that's a positive.

10. That is fascinating.
So, you have taken care of your mental health, were average in school and protested against an inhumane policy. Those things would all be used against you.

I was in politics also. I have tremendous respect for those that do it despite the scrutiny. Thanks.

21. Manchester has a toxic political culture
For decades, this was a very parochial, insular community. If you weren't part of one of the French/Irish/Greek good old boy cliques, or, conversely, you weren't part of the old money Yankee elite, you were left on the outside. The demographics of the city have changed tremendously, but there is still a lingering sour feel to the political culture.

I serve on a 14 member Board of Aldermen (city council). There are a grand total of two of us who didn't go to high school in Manchester. Even though I grew up only 25 miles away, I'm still a bit of a curiosity.

Worse, there's a mean streak to local politics. Sadly, there were a few Democratic Party poobahs who engaged in some unsavory activity over the years, and anyone who didn't buy into the system was pounded into rubble.

Today, it's breaking down, but certain cliques still hold a lot of sway. The public employees unions are very heavy-handed, and on the other side, the conservative were tarnished by the antics of some crude local pols. The result is a local debate that degenerates into "You hate children/love criminals/want more potholes" on one side and "Hack! Crook!" on the other. As a fiscally conservative Democrat, I tend to piss everyone off to a certain degree, so I get a lot of choice names directed at me.

I'm venting. Earlier tonight we had a budget hearing that lasted almost 5 hours and achieved absolutely nothing.

32. Vent away, my buddy.
No one that has not been in politics really understands what it takes to do so.

Those meetings where you have to stay alert and be honest and know what you are talking about are deadly.

All politics are local and I have nothing but respect for the people like you that take it on. No pay, no payback. Nothing but the pride of knowing that you gave your time and your energy and your talent to trying to make a change.

Thank you from me. :toast:

63. I have to give you credit for swimming in these shark infested waters, Bluedog.
I grew up here and had a few family members in local politics so I know what you're talking about. Local politics in these parts is not for the faint-hearted. No matter how bad the presidential campaigns get, I think Manchester politicians and "old families" can out-smear the best of them.

Thank you for being a shining light. (Now I'll quit with the metaphors).

for a few weeks, or a month, I don't really remember. I was about 12 years old, but I was committed for being suicidal, I scared the hell out of my parents. The place had a padded room, like you see in movies, and everything. It was really pathetic, I only met my shrink once, he was on vacation for most of the time I stayed there. On a side note, I lost my virginity in there, to another patient, she was 16. Yeah, it was co-ed.

55. A typo for BDSM.
The term "BDSM" is an abbreviation derived from the terms bondage, discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism. It defines a spectrum of behaviors, including dominance, submission, punishment, masochism, bondage, role play, and a large variety of other activities, frequently sexual in nature.

From Wikipedia. I debated not attributing this correctly in order to add plagarist to my list of faults.

60. Oh, where to begin...
- I've been on antidepressants since Middle School, and have no desire to get off them. Bad things happen when I get off them (bad things like losing motivation and a strong sense of apathy that in tern lead to me not caring enough to get back on meds or seek help)

- I dress up like video game/anime characters in public

- I have some erm... mature comics

- I play video games that may be occasionally *gasp* violent

- I'm a tree-hugging dirt-worshiper

- I have no shame

- I'm a furry

- I have a nerdy collection of game and anime figures that I always have on my desk

61. I have *thoroughly* screwed my son's political chances!
I sent him to the "Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Preschool" in the former Yugoslavia. He didn't come home spouting Marxist slogans: just Serbian obscenities. In my defense, being stuck in a tiny, crummy Soviet era apartment with a hyperactive toddler would have led to serious mental derangement if I couldn't have gotten him out of my hair for a couple of hours a day...

My mother was a Socialist. My great-aunt claimed to be Trotsky's mistress. I was once arrested during a sit-in in front of the Oakland Draft Board.

In short, about the only place my son could consider running for political office would be in Berkeley or Santa Cruz or some place like that. If so, I hope there's a small apartment above the garage for his Mom to stay when she visits.

Give them something small, but juicy to distract them, and always burn your clothes after the big ones. Never use your real name and change your name to something common, get lost in the system that way.

81. I hold office now.
I dunno--I am pretty open about my life and my history. I figure there is WAY too much stuff out there on any one of us to ever think it won't come to light if you try and hide it.

This last time I actually held my office due to the work of local Labor, a few Dems and some of the local GOP guys who respect me. I managed to piss off a few of the local Dems and they tried to take me out. My crime was that I stood publicly with the AFSCME local and two women who had been abused by a Dem office holder. I had warned the Dems a year before what this guy was and they chose to do nothing about it. When the union got involved I was out on picket line with them and I was willing to talk to the media about what he'd done to me in the workplace. I was standing there picketing my own party and it was my union brothers and sisters out there with me--not NOW, not prominent female Dems, not even people I had supported and worked to help.

I was told to sit down and shut up if I wanted to keep my office. I literally told them that if they wanted to come after me for standing for women in the workplace and for standing with local Labor they should feel free to try. They took me at my word, and I am still here while the abuser is gone. Oddly enough, the people I trusted initially (Dems) were some of the worst to deal with and some of the local Republicans were a big help. I would go to local Labor events and have building trades guys and Business Agents coming up to offer support. The few Dems that were around stood on the sidelines and glared.

Anyhow, the point of this story is to say that no matter how any of it plays out, you can be portrayed as being the next thing to a mass murderer an still survive it if you just keep your chin pointed into the wind. You get beat up some but the end result is that you realize there is WAY more support for fortitude than you ever imagined.

116. Let's see...
Stole a set of my high school keys and broke in at night. Found a lot about teacher and student files, learned that the principal could listen on every classroom (this was 1968), and since our keys included the keys to every student locker, we switched the contents of the lockers people we didn't like. Boy were THEY confused! However, no real vandalism, and we didn't steal so much as a paper clip. My co-conspirators and I were caught, but since did virtually no damage, (except to the egos of school honchos) all we got was a 3 day suspension.

Also dealt (and consumed) a fair amount of drugs in college. You know, pounds of pot, sheets of blotter. The statute of limitations is long gone, so I don't worry about it.

At any rate, probably not public office material. You see, I DID inhale. And liked it.

To say nothing of the fact that I'm a Democratic war veteran. We know how Americans despise us. Um.... dealing drugs, prostitution, pimping, my time with the Hell's Angels, the contract killing I arranged but backed out of, being a slut. None of it as bad as it sounds but requires much explanation. No one would vote for me for anything.

The pimping thing. The ladies made most of the money. The sex was entirely her choice. And if the guy didn't treat her with total respect, we never worked with him again. If it was a guy we didn't know well, she had to call in every 15 minutes or I'd call the police and turn us all in. A night in jail and a minor fine compared to a woman's life?

The contract killing..... My lover was stabbed 24 times with a hunting knife and hit in the head 3 times with an axe and spent 6 months in a coma. I wanted the man who did it dead. But I didn't follow through because I knew it was the wrong way to handle it.

So not so bad asw it sounds....

139. Wow, just wow.
I would vote for you based on your honesty. No one else might, but I would.

I extend my honest sympathy for what happened to your lover. Your post moved me.

143. Thanks!
Another one...

I was dating this guy. I knew he was younger than me. I was in my mid 20's and assumed he was in his early 20's. Odd for me, I usually only date people older than me.

But we were sitting around after sex just chatting. And he starts talking about how excited he is to graduate from high school.

My jaw dropped and I sat there stunned.

"Just how old are you?"

"17"

AlI could think was "Oh my god I'm a fucking damn pedophile!"

Then again I lost my virginity the day before my 16th birthday, so I couldn't blame him... but if I'd known I'd never have touched him.

One more thing to add to my list of crimes and sins.

Khash.

141. I know. It's all recorded on the internets.
My daughter asked where I was posting and I really did not want to tell her. She will see me here and I don't know what she will think.

148. I've decided that if I tell folk in the real world where to find my
on the internets, I better keep my online presence in line with what they expect of me.

I noticed I'm a jerk on line and am working on correcting that.:toast:

147. Oh, let's see...
what would they spin me as?

A polyamorous adulteresss who left her "lawful" abusive husband in order to indulge her own deep, sick fantasies of obtaining "true love"--a.k.a., love that doesn't drag you out of bed by the hair and threaten to kill you.

A disgusting affair with a man AND a woman that later turned into a long-term relationship with JUST the woman and a little boy baby who's growing up amongst Teh Ghey--oooo0000OOOO.

Also, that we're "lazy", "intellectual", "elitist" (in our trailer park, ha), uneducated, naive, selfish, and misguided. And that's just what other Democrats say! Goodness only knows what the Repukes would dig up on me. ;)
