Of course, I'm the development director at an NPR affiliate so I might be a little biased. And I do try to make ours fun; for instance we had a 12 hour boogie woogie piano marathon on the last weekday of our drive earlier this month.

They complain that the phones aren't ringing and say how they're going to keep interrupting programming until their goals/demands are met.

12. Yeah, but EVERY break, it's the same plea over and over... |

..."Give us money because we are worthwhile." I know, I know, kids. I get it. And sometimes I do give money. And when I have more, I will give more. I give what I can. I also support Pacifica, which as you know does not have corporate sponsors. It's all SO much better than mainstream commercial radio/TV-- this is understood. To quote Brian Eno, "...and any idiot would know that." I just wish the pledge drives on NPR could use a different, more entertaining approach to fund-raising. I recall one segment at KCRW in Santa Monica, maybe a dozen years ago-- the great Joe Frank did one of his radio monologues in service to fund raising, and it was truly brilliant. That brought my checkbook out. It's a shame there isn't more of this kind of stuff vis a vis fund-raising.

7. As opposed to the constant barrage of commercials 365 days/year |
|
for shoddy programming and results in massive Clear Channel profits?
Hmm... I'll put up with it a few times per year without complaint.

8. Just cough up some dough and then you can listen guilt-free! |

I find the pledge drive is no longer annoying to me now that I can sit back in smug satisfaction, sipping my tea out of my NPR mug, and think, "They're not talking to ME anymore!" :D

10. We get the BBC at night |
|
and the pledge drives even break into that. I think once you've given you should receive some kind of special code that lets you avoid the interruptions.
