Bunny Follow-Up: They Euthanized The Baby Bunny |
|

the baby i found in my yard, the only bunny that wasn't killed by the cat
it was uninjured
we kept it in the house for two days so the cat wouldn't kill it. we fed it, kept it warm, talked to it.
we took it to the wildlife center because it was difficult to get the baby to eat. i took it there because they do tubing to make it eat.
i got a standard print out on the postcard from them.
i'm very sad about this.
shit! i mean, i could've killed it. i didn't need to take it there for that to happen. i took it there so they could get the baby to eat more. shit!

6. the print out they stuck to the post card said |
|
"the animal was debilitated and dehydrated on arrival, which is not an uncommon condition in sick and injured wildlife. wildlife must hide their injuries and illness to prevent other animals from predation upon them. treatment was attempted, but despite our care, the animal did not improve. the animal was humanely euthanized to prevent further suffering."
i brought it in to prevent/stop dyhydration--they told me the baby probably needed "tubing" when i called--
damn, peggy--i just feel so fucking bad about this.

7. I know you do, sweetie... |
|
It's going to be tough for awhile...
I do suspect they knew what they were doing...
Unpleasant though that is...
They weren't emotionally involved the way you are...
And that makes it tougher for you...
You did what you could...

I remember this the other day, I felt bad for you, it would have traumatized me for sure  It's okay though, the bunny just needed it's mother I guess. It's still good that you found it and brought it in so do not feel bad.

8. This may sound callous, but try not to be too upset about it |
|
Having volunteered in wildlife rescue, sometimes animals just die or don't get better for no discernable reason.
They're experts, and they did the best they could. :(

You tried and did your best. That's all you could do.
I read your original thread too, and I was hoping for the best, but the odds were against you from the start fromwhat I read from those more knowledgeable. I had a bunny for six years. When she died I was devastated. I cried for days. And I still have her ashes in my bedroom on a shelf. I understand about loving animals so much. But, you did what you could. Don't blame yourself, you did a wonderful thing.
